Chi-Med announces initiation of Phase III sulfatinib registration trial in patients with NETs in China

Hutchison China MediTech Limited today announces that Hutchison MediPharma Limited, its drug R&D subsidiary, has initiated SANET-ep, a Phase III sulfatinib (HMPL-012) registration trial in China in patients with extra-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors ("NETs"), which are all non-pancreatic NETs, including, for example, NETs originating in the lymph, lung and across the gastrointestinal tract.

Family members of CUP patients at higher risk of developing CUP themselves

Cancer usually begins in one location and then spreads, but in 3 percent to 5 percent of cancer patients, the tissue where a cancer begins is unknown. In these individuals a cancer diagnosis is made because it has metastasized to other sites. Patients with these so-called "cancers of unknown primary," or CUP, have a very poor prognosis, with a median survival of three months.

Study explores link between obesity and breast-cancer related lymphedema

Each year, about 1.38 million women worldwide are diagnosed with breast cancer. Advances in treatment have facilitated a 90% five-year survival rate among those treated. Given the increased rate and length of survival following breast cancer, more and more survivors are facing life-time risk of developing late effects of cancer treatment that negatively impact long-term survival. In particular, Breast cancer-related lymphedema is one of the most distressing and feared late effects.

Monitoring CA125 levels may help reduce ovarian cancer deaths by nearly 20%

Initial results from the world's largest ovarian cancer screening trial suggest that tracking levels of a cancer-associated protein over time may help reduce ovarian cancer deaths by as much as 20 percent. Results of the 14-year study, led by investigators at University College London, are being published online in The Lancet.

Roche files direct de novo application to FDA for Anti-Mullerian assay

Roche announced today that it has filed a direct de novo application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a fully automated Anti-Mullerian (AMH) assay for use on Roche's full portfolio of laboratory analyzers. The determination of AMH is useful for the assessment of ovarian reserve in women presenting to infertility clinics for evaluation in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory findings.

USF professors named 2015 Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors

University of South Florida professors Selim A. Chacour, David M. Eddy, Dean F. Martin, and G. Douglas Letson have been named 2015 Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Chacour and Eddy are in the Institute for Advanced Discovery & Innovation, Martin is in the College of Arts and Sciences and Letson holds appointments at both Moffitt Cancer Center and USF.
