Diabetes prevention begins in the womb

60 million people worldwide are living with diabetes mellitus, and one in ten people over the age of 25 will develop the condition (type 2) at some stage in their lives. Globally, around 3.4 million people die from diabetes and its consequences every year. "Every six seconds, somebody somewhere in the world dies from diabetes", says Alexandra Kautzky-Willer from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the MedUni Vienna's University Department of Internal Medicine III.

EU-funded research project aims to reduce oxidation in processed meat products

An EU-funded research project is to make sausages, patties and other meat products healthier in the future. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and four other European research institutions have launched a joint project to reduce the risk of colon cancer - the most common cancer of the gastrointestinal tract in Sweden.

Patients with kidney failure at increased risk of developing different types of cancer

For patients with kidney failure, poor kidney function and immunosuppressant medications may increase their risk of developing different types of cancer. The findings, which are published in a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, suggest the need for persistent cancer screening and prevention in these patients.

Houston Methodist investigator awarded NCI grant to study detection strategies for breast cancer-specific subtypes

The National Cancer Institute awarded Houston Methodist investigator Randa El-Zein, M.B., Ch.B., Ph.D., a $2.8 million, five-year U01 grant to combine mammography features with blood-based biomarkers to more precisely predict a woman's risk for breast cancer-specific subtypes.

A new RNA test of blood platelets can be used to detect, classify and pinpoint the location of cancer by analysing a sample equivalent to one drop of blood. Using this new method for blood-based RNA tests of blood platelets, researchers have been able to identify cancer with 96 per cent accuracy. This according to a study at Umeå University in Sweden recently published in the journal Cancer Cell.
