NEB releases new NEBNext Ultra II DNA Library Prep Kit

New England Biolabs today announced the release of the NEBNext Ultra II DNA Library Prep Kit for Illumina next generation sequencing systems. The new Ultra II kit substantially improves upon its predecessor to produce libraries of both higher quality and higher yield from a variety of sample types, including challenging ones, such as formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples and those containing low amounts of input DNA.

Antibiotic resistance potentially threatens the safety and efficacy of surgical procedures and immunosuppression therapies

This week The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal published the strongest evidence to date that increasing antibiotic resistance could have disastrous consequences for patients undergoing surgery or cancer chemotherapy. Based on a review of published literature, researchers predict that a 30% reduction in the efficacy of the prophylactic antibiotics routinely given when these procedures are performed could result in 120,000 more infections and 6300 infection-related deaths every year in the USA alone.

UM SOM researchers to initiate first clinical trial of GammaPod system in patients with early-stage breast cancer

After more than a decade of research and development, researchers in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine will begin enrolling patients in the first clinical trial of GammaPod, a new high-precision, image-guided radiation therapy system specifically designed to treat early-stage breast cancer.

Aratana Therapeutics, Inc., a pet therapeutics company focused on the licensing, development and commercialization of innovative biopharmaceutical products for companion animals, today announced a $40 million senior secured credit facility with Pacific Western Bank, as agent and lender, and Oxford Finance LLC, as lender. The facility refinances the $15 million loan facility previously provided to the Company by Pacific Western Bank (as successor-in-interest to Square 1 Bank).
