Molecular Health, TestAnalytika sign distribution agreement for TreatmentMAP in Latin American region

Molecular Health signed an agreement with TestAnalytika to be its preferred distributor in the Latin American region at the 2015 ASCO Annual Meeting. TestAnalytika will begin to market and distribute Molecular Health's cancer treatment decision support product, TreatmentMAP, to patients, physicians, hospitals, laboratories, cancer centers and insurers in Latin America later this year.

Researchers report new way to treat T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center and its Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center are reporting a potentially important discovery in the battle against one of the most devastating forms of leukemia that accounts for as many as one in five children with a particularly aggressive form of the disease relapsing within a decade.

Washington Healthcare Authority selects UW Medicine ACN as new healthcare option for employees

The UW Medicine Accountable Care Network today announced that the Washington Healthcare Authority has chosen the UW Medicine ACN as a new healthcare option for those enrolled in the Public Employees Benefit Board (PEBB) program. The new option will be available to these employees during the 2015 open enrollment period in November, with coverage beginning January 1, 2016.

Merck Canada announces conditional approval of KEYTRUDA (pembrolizumab) for melanoma treatment

Merck Canada Inc. announced today that KEYTRUDATM (pembrolizumab) was authorized for sale with conditions by Health Canada on May 19, 2015. KEYTRUDA is a humanized monoclonal antibody that works by increasing the ability of the body's immune system to fight advanced melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. It is the first of a new class of therapies called anti-PD-1s approved in Canada.

BioLineRx's BL-9020 antibody holds promise in treating Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, which usually appears in children and adolescents, affects over 30 million people worldwide. Resulting from an auto-immune reaction that destroys the pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin, the disease leads to pathologically high levels of sugar in the blood and urine, resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. The current treatment for Type 1 diabetes is lifetime administration of insulin by injection.

The flu kills hundreds of thousands of people around the world every year, yet there is essentially only one class of drugs to fight the ever-changing virus. Cases of flu resistant to this class of drugs have already been reported and researchers worry a completely new strain of flu could evolve, leading to a pandemic like the one in 1918 that killed approximately 50 million people.

Non-invasive prenatal testing can detect maternal cancer at early stage

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for chromosomal foetal disorders is used increasingly to test for conditions such as Down's syndrome. NIPT examines DNA from the foetus in the mother's blood, and therefore does not carry the risk of miscarriage involved in invasive testing methods.

Janssen begins rolling submission of daratumumab BLA to FDA for treatment of patients with multiple myeloma

Janssen Research & Development, LLC has initiated the rolling submission of its Biologic License Application (BLA) for daratumumab to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of patients with multiple myeloma who have received at least three prior lines of therapy, including a proteasome inhibitor (PI) and an immunomodulatory agent (IMiD), or who are double refractory to a PI and an IMiD.

University at Albany researcher receives $1.76 million NIH grant to explore role of vitamin D in breast cancer

Each year, about 230,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women in the U.S. It remains the third leading cause of death, behind only heart disease and lung cancer. Of the new cases, about 20 percent of women will be diagnosed with "triple negative" breast cancer (TNBC), a deadly form of breast cancer that does not respond to standard treatments such as tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors.

Once-weekly Trulicity 0.75 mg shows promising results in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes

Results from a new study of Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes showed once-weekly Trulicity 0.75 mg provided greater hemoglobin A1c (A1C) reduction compared to once-daily Victoza 0.9 mg after 52 weeks of treatment. Eli Lilly and Company will present these data at the 75th American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions in Boston.
