A first-ever study from a large Canadian centre found that kidney transplant recipients lived longer and had better treatment success than patients on intensive home hemodialysis, but also had an increased risk of being hospitalized within the first year.

Acceleron, Celgene to give oral presentations on beta-thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndromes at EHA meeting

Acceleron Pharma Inc., a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of novel protein therapeutics for cancer and rare diseases, today reported that Acceleron, Celgene and investigators in the sotatercept and ACE-536 phase 2 clinical trials will give three oral presentations of interim data from ongoing studies in beta-thalassemia and myelodysplastic syndromes as well as a poster presentation of nonclinical data in sickle cell disease at the 19th Annual Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) in Milan, Italy from June 12-15, 2014.

Agios Pharmaceuticals to present AG-221 Phase 1 study results at EHA meeting

Agios Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leader in the fields of cancer metabolism and inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs), today announced that new clinical data from the Phase 1 study of AG-221, an orally available, selective, potent inhibitor of the mutated IDH2 protein, will be highlighted in an oral presentation at the 19th Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) taking place June 12 -15, 2014 in Milan, Italy.

Study shows image fusion guided biopsy improves accuracy of prostate cancer diagnosis

A recent study by investigators from LIJ Medical Center demonstrated that using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in men with an elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) resulted in a prostate cancer detection rate that was twice as high as data reported in the March 1999 Prostate journal that analyzed men undergoing the standard 12-core biopsy with an elevated PSA.

According to a new systematic review article, radiofrequency ablation and complete endoscopic resection are equally effective in the short-term treatment of dysplastic Barrett's esophagus, but adverse event rates are higher with complete endoscopic resection.
