Higher levels of physical activity reduces risk of prostate cancer recurrence, mortality

Men who walked at a fast pace prior to a prostate cancer diagnosis had more regularly shaped blood vessels in their prostate tumors compared with men who walked slowly, providing a potential explanation for why exercise is linked to improved outcomes for men with prostate cancer, according to results presented here at the AACR-Prostate Cancer Foundation Conference on Advances in Prostate Cancer Research, held Jan. 18-21.

Research findings may offer new therapeutic target for management of Gaucher diseas

What causes brain damage and inflammation in severe cases of Gaucher disease? Little is known about the events that lead to brain pathology in some forms of the disease, and there is currently no treatment available - a bleak outlook for sufferers and their families. Now, scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science have discovered a new cellular pathway implicated in Gaucher disease.

New collaboration aims to push cancer diagnostics to the next level

A collaboration between National Cancer Centre Singapore and Clearbridge BioMedics, in partnership with the Pathology Department at Singapore General Hospital has resulted in the establishment of the region's first Circulating Tumour Cell Centre of Research Excellence. This new Centre facilitates the use of circulating tumour cells in clinical diagnostics, in order for new technologies to be applied by healthcare institutions.

University of Huddersfield scientist awarded prestigious Clulow Award by British Pain Society

IN the UK alone, an estimated 7.8 million people have their lives blighted by chronic pain, and 44 per cent are failing to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Now, a University of Huddersfield scientist, backed by funding from the British Pain Society and crucial support from the National Institute of Health Research, is embarking on research which aims to help doctors diagnose and treat one of the least understood but most widespread sources of chronic suffering.

Japanese MHLW approves ADCETRIS for relapsed or refractory CD30-positive HL and ALCL

Seattle Genetics, Inc. today announced that its collaborator, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, has received approval of ADCETRIS (brentuximab vedotin) from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for the treatment of patients with CD30-positive relapsed or refractory Hodgkin lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the commercial availability of Iclusig (ponatinib) for adult patients with refractory chronic myeloid leukemia and Philadelphia-chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the United States. Gilead Sciences, Inc. today announced that the European Commission has granted marketing authorization for Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) 400 mg tablets, a once-daily oral nucleotide analogue polymerase inhibitor for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection in adults, in combination with other antiviral agents (ribavirin and pegylated interferon alpha (peg-IFN)).

Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation selects UofL for newly established Care Center Network

The University of Louisville is one of nine pilot sites selected by the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation for its newly established Care Center Network and the PFF Patient Registry program. Rafael Perez, M.D., director of the UofL Interstitial Lung Disease program in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Disorders Medicine, will lead the UofL site.

Research findings could lead to life-saving treatments to fight tumor metastasis

A team of researchers from the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve School of Medicine have identified critical complex mechanisms involved in the metastasis of deadly "triple negative" breast cancers. These tumors are extremely difficult to treat, frequently return after remission, and are the most aggressive form of breast cancer in women. The discovery of this critical interaction of mechanisms could be used to develop new life saving treatments to kill metastatic tumors in TNBC.
