Different subtypes of HER2+ breast cancer facilitate more effective treatment tailored to specific tumor

Research led by the Translational Genomics Group at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) in Barcelona has not only shown that HER2+ breast cancer can be classified into four different subtypes, but also unmasked a subtype showing both a greater response to and increased benefit from chemotherapy and anti-HER2 therapy.

CSHL professor identifies two proteins that control structure of chandelier cells

Chandelier cells are neurons that use their unique shape to act like master circuit breakers in the brain's cerebral cortex. These cells have dozens, often hundreds, of branching axonal projections - output channels from the cell body of the neuron - that lend the full structure of a chandelier-like appearance.

Professor wins NSF CAREER grant to develop 5-D in vivo image of atherosclerotic plaques

Currently, the medical community has limited ability in clinically assessing blockages called atherosclerotic plaques in the human body. These dangerous blockages that can lead to heart attacks and strokes are not easily diagnosed due to "the lack of noninvasive imaging techniques to accurately model atherosclerotic plaques in vivo," said Guohua Cao, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech.

Research shows biological link between paternal diet and health of offspring

Research involving rats suggests that there is a biological link between paternal diet, bodyweight and health at the time of conception and the health of his offspring. In a new research report published online in The FASEB Journal, scientists show that if male rats ate a high fat diet, had diabetes and were obese, their offspring had altered gene expression in two important metabolic tissues--pancreas and fat (even though they were not yet obese).
