Study of fruit flies could help better understand food choice in obese people

Think of the smell of freshly baking bread. There is something in that smell, without any other cues - visual or tactile - that steers you toward the bakery. On the flip side, there may be a smell, for instance that of fresh fish, that may not appeal to you. If you haven't eaten a morsel of food in three days, of course, a fishy odor might seem a good deal more attractive.

The Surgical Oncology Department of the University of New Mexico Cancer Center is growing even larger. Ashwani Rajput, MD, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at the UNM School of Medicine, has recently recruited two new hires for the department. Bridget Fahy, MD, who specializes in colorectal and complex pelvic cancer, and Anna Voltura, MD, who specializes in breast cancer, are both excited about the opportunity to work in an NCI designated cancer center.

University of Massachusetts Medical School Professor and Vice Chair of Neurobiology Vivian Budnik, PhD, has received a four-year, $1.3 million EUREKA (Exceptional Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to explore a novel mechanism of communication between the cytoplasm and the nucleus, called nuclear envelope budding, that may lead to new understandings for various tissue dystrophies and aging disorders.
