Women & Infants gets $3M grant to identify infants at greatest risk for developmental impairment

Advances in technology and medical care have dramatically improved survival for infants born prior to 30 weeks gestation and weighing less than three pounds. However, up to 50 percent of these infants may develop physical, cognitive, language and/or behavioral impairments that require extensive health care, educational and psychosocial community resources through adulthood. At this time, there is no reliable method to identify those infants who will go on to develop impairments and those who will not.

It's a problem inherent to contemporary liberalism, which is that liberals' proudest achievement, the modern welfare state, tends to resist, corrupt and baffle their efforts at comprehensive reform (Ross Douthat, 11/16).

Manipulating PRH protein can help prevent cancer cells from unnecessary migration

Understanding how and why cancer cells move away from their original location is important to find ways to stop the spread of the disease. New findings, published in the Nature journal Oncogene, reveal how a protein, called 'PRH', is normally able to prevent cells from unnecessary migration. It is likely that this protein is less effective in cancer cells allowing the cells to venture away.

Young adults who survived childhood cancer are more likely than their peers to be frail, according to a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital study, which reported the condition is more common among female survivors than women decades older. The research appears in the November 18 online edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

BIDMC pilot study shows promise for age-related cognitive disorders

It's well known that the brains of meditators change, but it's not entirely clear what those changes mean or how the changes might benefit the meditator. A new pilot study led by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center suggests that the brain changes associated with meditation and stress reduction may play an important role in slowing the progression of age-related cognitive disorders like Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

Generex Biotechnology Corporation today announced that it has reached a pre-specified point in the ongoing Phase II trial of its AE37 breast cancer vaccine to initiate its primary efficacy analysis. The drug is a novel immunotherapeutic cancer vaccine being developed by the Company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Antigen Express, Inc. A previously released positive interim analysis showed a strong trend toward reduced relapse in breast cancer patients receiving the AE37 vaccine.

Kiadis Pharma B.V., a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing treatments for blood cancers, today announces the successful Phase II enrollment of approximately ten patients of whom the majority have already been transplanted and received ATIR™. Kiadis Pharma's lead program, ATIR™, is a cell-based product designed to enable stem cell transplantations from partially mismatched (haploidentical) family donors for blood cancer patients who do not have a standard of care stem cell donor available. Topline data from the trial (CR-AIR-007) is expected in the first half of 2014.

New hope for patients whose melanoma has metastasised to the brain

New data show that in patients whose melanoma (BRAF V600 mutation-positive) has spread (metastasised) to the brain, Zelboraf (vemurafenib) extends life expectancy by over six months compared to chemotherapy.1 These results are welcome news for patients suffering from metastatic melanoma, as up to half of these patients are diagnosed with brain metastases with many given less than six months to live.1
