Working with cells in test tubes and in mice, researchers at Johns Hopkins have discovered that a chemical commonly used as a dog food preservative may prevent the kind of painful nerve damage found in the hands and feet of four out of five cancer patients taking the chemotherapy drug Taxol.

Mayo Clinic researchers have shown that a specific protein pair may be a successful prognostic biomarker for identifying smoking-related lung cancers. The protein — ASCL1 — is associated with increased expression of the RET oncogene, a particular cancer-causing gene called RET. The findings appear in the online issue of the journal Oncogene.

arGEN-X, a clinical stage human monoclonal antibody therapeutics company, announces it has attained a key success milestone in its SIMPLE Antibody research and product development collaboration with the Human Genetic Therapies division of Shire Pharmaceuticals. Isis Pharmaceuticals announces preliminary data from ISIS-SMNRx Phase 1 study in infants with SMA

Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that follow-up preliminary data from a single dose, open-label Phase 1 study of ISIS-SMNRx in children with spinal muscular atrophy, show that most SMA children receiving the two highest doses of the drug (6 mg and 9 mg) continued to show improvements in muscle function tests up to 14 months after a single injection of the drug.

Shorter course of radiotherapy safe and effective for women with breast cancer

The long-term results of the landmark START trials conclusively confirm that giving radiotherapy as a lower overall dose in fewer, higher doses over a shorter treatment time (hypofractionated) is at least as effective and safe as the current international standard for most women with early breast cancer.
