Toshiba receives order from NIRS for carbon ion radiotherapy system

Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has received an order from Japan's National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) for the world's first rotating gantry irradiation system with superconducting magnets for a carbon ion radiotherapy system. The system will be installed in a new radiotherapy room that NIRS is constructing at its facility in Chiba, east of Tokyo, in March 2015.

New survey commissioned by PhRMA identifies America's top health priorities

A new survey commissioned by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America shows 86 percent of Americans believe developing cures for more forms of cancer should be one of the top national health priorities, followed by developing effective treatments for heart disease (78 percent) and more intensive medical care for seniors (76 percent).

We need a serious and sustained presidential conversation with the country about the new health care reform laws - or progressives risk losing ownership of this once-in-generation liberal reform. If you listen to people in focus group discussions right now, they are clueless about the most basic policies in the reforms, even though parts of the law are already in place, the exchanges are to be launched in October, and the law's requirements and benefits will become fully operative in January. ... Deciphering the body's complex molecular pathways that lead to disease when they malfunction is highly challenging. Researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute now have a more complete picture of one particular pathway that can lead to cancer and diabetes. In the study published by Molecular Cell, the scientists uncovered how a protein called p62 has a cascade affect in regulating cell growth in response to the presence of nutrients such as amino acids and glucose. Disrupting this chain may offer a new approach to treating disease.
