Toremifene reduces fracture risk in men with prostate cancer after initiation of androgen deprivation therapy

GTx, Inc. today announced that additional study results from the Phase III clinical trial evaluating toremifene 80 mg for the prevention of fractures in men with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy will be presented at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association being held in San Francisco May 29-June 3.

Celgene Corporation announced that as a result of Barr Laboratories, Inc., withdrawing its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for thalidomide with the US Food and Drug Administration, the US District Court for the District of New Jersey has granted the requested dismissal of all claims and counterclaims in the thalidomide patent cases.

YM BioSciences initiates enrollment in nimotuzumab trial in brain metastases from NSCLC

YM BioSciences Inc., today announced that the first US patient has been enrolled in its randomized, double-blind trial evaluating nimotuzumab in patients with brain metastases from NSCLC at the Florida Cancer Institute - New Hope. This trial initiation follows recent clearance from the US FDA announced on January 26, 2010 allowing the Company to enroll patients at US clinical sites for two of its international and ongoing randomized, double-blind Phase II trials of nimotuzumab.

SonoSite signs agreement to acquire privately held Visualsonics

SonoSite, Inc., the world leader and specialist in bedside and point-of-care ultrasound, today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire privately held Visualsonics, a Toronto-based company focused on ultra high-frequency micro-ultrasound technology. The aggregate transaction value will be approximately $71 million net of cash and debt.

BDSI partners with Kunwha to develop and commercialize BEMA Fentanyl in Republic of Korea

BioDelivery Sciences International, Inc. announced that it has entered into a license and supply agreement with Kunwha Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., for the exclusive rights to develop and commercialize BEMA Fentanyl (marketed as ONSOLIS in the U.S.) in the Republic of Korea. The agreement results in potential milestone payments to BDSI of up to $1,275,000, which includes an upfront payment of $300,000. In addition, BDSI will receive an ongoing royalty based on net sales.

Abnormal androgen signaling in ovaries cause female infertility

Male sex hormones, such as testosterone, have well defined roles in male reproduction and prostate cancer. What may surprise many is that they also play an important role in female fertility. A new study finds that the presence and activity of male sex hormones in the ovaries helps regulate female fertility, likely by controlling follicle growth and development and preventing deterioration of follicles that contain growing eggs.

Study finds improvement in detection of breast cancer in mammograms over 9-year period

Researchers analyzing 2.5 million screening mammograms performed on nearly one million women found discrimination of cancerous from non-cancerous lesions improved over a nine-year period. Results of the study are published in the online edition of the journal Radiology.

Shark cartilage extract shows no benefit for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer

In the first scientific study of its kind, shark cartilage extract, AE-941 or Neovastat, has shown no benefit as a therapeutic agent when combined with chemotherapy and radiation for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, according to researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
