Poon, a principal investigator of the Phase I ThermoDox® dose escalation trial, held a press conference at the University of Hong Kong to provide an update on the long-term follow-up data from patients treated at his center as well as present illustrative patient case studies. The Phase I trial was conducted in 2006.

Flavonoids of onion are natural alternative to artificial additives in food industry: Study

Some components of the onion have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, making it possible to use this bulb for food preservation. This is demonstrated by researchers from the Polytechnic University of Catalu-a and the University of Barcelona in a study that has just been published in the International Journal of Food Science and Technology.

Cequent Pharmaceuticals commences toxicology study of CEQ508 tkRNAi-based therapeutic candidate

Cequent Pharmaceuticals, a pioneer in the development of novel products to deliver RNAi-based treatments to prevent and treat human disease, has initiated a long-term (26-week) toxicology study of CEQ508 – the company's lead drug candidate based on its proprietary tkRNAi technology. This study is designed to enable a Phase II clinical trial slated for 2011. CEQ508 targets beta-catenin, a key oncogene implicated in the formation of colonic polyps and in the progression of polyps to colorectal cancer.

Rudd announces funds for north coast NSW cancer centers

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had announced a regional cancer center in the mid-north coast on Tuesday at Port Macquarie. He says plans are underway to invest almost $5 million for a second linear accelerator at the Port Base Hospital.

UALR researcher receives federal grant to track estrogen-mimicking compounds in consumer products

Dr. Jerry Darsey, professor of chemistry in UALR's College of Science and Mathematics, has received $77,000 from a federal Food and Drug Administration grant to develop methods to track estrogen mimicking compounds in various products and assess how use of the products affect women.

New research identifies cellular channel that regulates skin and hair growth

Skin and hair follicles are constantly renewed in the body, maintained by specialized stem cells. New research from Children's Hospital Boston identifies a small cellular channel that regulates skin and hair growth and that could be targeted with small-molecule drugs, potentially treating variety of skin conditions, as well as thinning hair or unwanted hair growth. Findings appear in the April 16, 2010 issue of Cell.

LOTS results of Myozyme in older children and adults with Pompe disease published

Genzyme Corp. today announced that the results from its Late-Onset Treatment Study have been published in today's New England Journal of Medicine. The study was undertaken to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Myozyme (alglucosidase alfa) in older children and adults with Pompe disease.

Boston Scientific receives FDA clearance to resume distribution of COGNIS CRT-Ds and TELIGEN ICDs

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced that it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for the two validated manufacturing changes affecting all of its cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators and implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and that it will immediately resume distribution of its COGNIS CRT-Ds and TELIGEN ICDs.
