Aurora Breast MRI and Clear Channel Radio join to support The Wellness Community fundraiser

Aurora Breast MRI of Sarasota today announced it has partnered with Clear Channel Radio for a fundraising effort to benefit The Wellness Community of Southwest Florida. The fundraiser, titled “Change for Change,” will consist of a series of breast cancer awareness messages throughout the month of October to encourage donations at area “Change for Change” locations.

Sciele Pharma files NDA for glycopyrrolate oral solution

Sciele Pharma, Inc., a Shionogi company, today announced that it has submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for glycopyrrolate oral solution to treat chronic, moderate-to-severe drooling in pediatric patients. This condition often results from cerebral palsy as well as from other neurological disorders.

NHGRI and NIMH fund $45 million to establish Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), both part of the National Institutes of Health, today announced grants expected to total approximately $45 million to establish new Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science at the Medical College of Wisconsin and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as well as to continue support of existing centers at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Southern California.

NINDS: $50 billion spent each year for low back pain

A study by researchers at The George Institute for International Health in Australia found that it is rare for patients presenting to PCPs with acute lower back pain to have previously undiagnosed serious diseases. The most common serious disease cause documented was vertebral fracture, with half of the cases identified at the time of initial consultation.

Radiation treatment after prostate cancer surgery eradicates recurrent cancer

The largest single-institution study of its kind has found few complications in prostate cancer patients treated with radiotherapy after surgery to remove the prostate. Men in this study received radiotherapy after a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test following surgery indicated their cancer had recurred.

Estrogen withdrawal may play a significant role in joint pain during breast cancer treatment

Aromatase inhibitors, the same drugs that have buoyed long-term survival rates among breast cancer patients, also carry side effects including joint pain so severe that many patients discontinue these lifesaving medicines. New University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine research, however, has uncovered patterns that may help clinicians identify and help women at risk of these symptoms sooner in order to increase their chances of sticking with their treatment regimen.

Proton therapy center to treat pediatric and adult cancer patients

The development of a proton therapy center in the Pacific Northwest has taken a significant step forward with the signing of a letter of intent between the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and ProCure Treatment Centers Inc. (ProCure). SCCA and ProCure announced the agreement today and are moving the project forward to bring this advanced form of radiation therapy to adult and pediatric cancer patients.
