The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and FORMA Therapeutics, Inc., today announced they have begun a partnership to discover and develop small molecule compounds against a key lymphoma target, Bcl-6.

Novo Growth Equity invests in Orexo

Orexo AB and Novo A/S today announced combined transactions encompassing a directed new issue by Orexo of a SEK 111 million convertible bond to Denmark-based Novo A/S and the acquisition of significant blocks of existing shares by Novo A/S from two existing venture capital shareholders, subject to approval at an Extraordinary General Meeting. The conversion price of the convertible bonds is set at 25 per cent premium to the closing share price on 12 March, 2010.

Enzo Biochem to market MultiGEN’s multiplex DNA sequencing based diagnostic tests in state of New York

Enzo Biochem, Inc. today announced that it has entered into an agreement with MultiGEN Diagnostics Inc., of San Diego, California, for exclusive rights to market MultiGEN’s unique diagnostic tests based on multiplex DNA sequencing, in the state of New York. In addition, Enzo has been granted marketing rights for other non-exclusive territories in United States.

YM BioSciences: Two posters on nimotuzumab accepted for presentation at AACR

YM BioSciences Inc., today announced that two posters have been accepted for presentation at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting to be held from April 17-21 in Washington, DC. The first poster describes the results of the previously reported collaboration with researchers at the University of Toronto for the development of highly potent antibody-radionuclide conjugates for use in the treatment of cancer. The poster will describe activity of 111In-NLS-nimotuzumab against breast cancer cells with high and low EGFR expression.

Reducing collateral damage to excised tissue: Surgeons study device using radiofrequency energy

Every year more than 100,000 women in the United States undergo a lumpectomy, a conservative procedure to remove cancerous tumors while preserving the breast. The surgeon's goal is to attain a tumor-free, or negative, surgical margin the first time they operate. Current surgical tools may cause heat damage to the tissue samples needed for examination by a pathologist in order to identify the presence of cancerous cells on the edges of tumors.

Researchers discover microtentacles that play key role in spreading cancer to distant locations in body

Researchers at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center have discovered that "microtentacles," or extensions of the plasma membrane of breast cancer cells, appear to play a key role in how cancers spread to distant locations in the body. Targeting these microtentacles might prove to be a new way to prevent or slow the growth of these secondary cancers, the scientists say.

Bone implants that support and release chemotherapeutical agents in ciclodextrin nanocapsule

Chemotherapy, followed by the surgical removal of the affected tissue is the treatment usually adapted to bone tumors. An implant which can fill the areas of subtraction, while releasing chemotherapeutical agents locally, in a controlled manner, during the treatment period, is the aim of a research led by the Research Centre in Ceramic Material and Composites (CICECO/UA). In these experiences, specialists are using potential "anti-tumor" drugs coated by nanocapsules.

A new study from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet shows that the blood vessels and muscles of the heart can regulate the uptake of fatty acids that we ingest through meat, milk products and other food. The researchers behind the study have also identified the way in which regulation is governed by the muscles themselves.

Cancer care system in Canada does not meet the needs of young cancer patients

Canada's cancer care system is not meeting the unique needs of young cancer patients. Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients and survivors often 'fall through the cracks' of a system that focuses on cancer in children or adults, but does not provide specialized care for this in-between group. To understand why and develop solutions, an international group of young survivors and cancer specialists will come together in Toronto.
