Provectus Pharmaceuticals receives $7.5M in private placement offering

Provectus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a development-stage oncology and dermatology biopharmaceutical company, announced today that it has received gross proceeds of approximately $7.5 million in a private placement offering to institutional and accredited investors. In connection with the closing, the Company issued approximately 10.0 million shares of its convertible preferred stock and warrants to purchase approximately 5.0 million shares of its common stock at an exercise price of $1.00 per share.

Vermont: Only state to pass bill mandating coverage of colon cancer screening

Progress towards nationwide, state-mandated coverage of colon cancer screening according to accepted medical guidelines has slowed to a crawl as state legislators await the outcome of the health care reform debate at the federal level, a coalition of public health associations and medical professional societies reported today. With a better grade for only a single state – Vermont – 2009 marks the least improvement in a single year since the Colorectal Cancer Legislation Report Card began in 2004.

Micromet prices public offering at $7.00 per share

Micromet, Inc. announced today the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 10 million shares of common stock at a public offering price of $7.00 per share. The Company has granted the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase an additional 1.5 million shares of common stock from the Company. All of the shares in the offering are being sold by Micromet. The closing of the offering is expected to take place on March 17, 2010, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.

Study shows experimental thyroid drug reduces cholesterol

An experimental thyroid drug reduces cholesterol without the troublesome side effects experienced by some people on statins, according to a study published today in The New England Journal of Medicine. An international team of investigators at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, the Karolinska University Hospital and Institute, and The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research tested a substance called Eprotirome in patients with high cholesterol.

New method to better study prostate cancer

Van Andel Research Institute researchers have developed a new method to better study the cells that line and protect the prostate in relation to the development of cancer. Using the model, they found that normal cells and cancer cells depend on different factors to survive, which could aid in discovering how to target cancer cells without affecting normal cells when developing treatments.

Two Phase 3 studies of Sutent in advanced breast cancer fail to meet primary endpoints

Pfizer Inc. announced today that two Phase 3 studies of Sutent® (sunitinib malate) in advanced breast cancer did not meet their primary endpoints. The SUN 1064 Phase 3 study of sunitinib in combination with docetaxel for the first-line treatment of patients with advanced HER-2 negative breast cancer did not show a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival compared with docetaxel alone.
