Clinical trials of personalised vaccines to fight glioblastomas

The University of Navarra Hospital has launched a series of clinical trials in order to assess the efficacy of an immunotherapy treatment. This approach involves the application of personalised vaccines —produced from healthy and tumour cells from the patient him or herself— and designed to combat glioblastomas, one of the most aggressive and frequent malignant tumours.

BioMarin Pharmaceutical receives FDA orphan drug designation for 3,4-DAP

BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. announced today that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted orphan drug designation for 3,4-diaminopyridine (3,4-DAP), amifampridine phosphate, for the rare autoimmune disease Lambert Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS). 3,4-DAP has previously received orphan drug designation in the E.U.

Bavarian Nordic to file a NDS for IMVAMUNE with Health Canada

Bavarian Nordic A/S announced today that the company expects to file a New Drug Submission (NDS) for its third-generation smallpox vaccine, IMVAMUNE(R) with the Canadian Authorities, Health Canada in 2010. If successful, this would be the first marketing approval of IMVAMUNE(R).

Kiadis Pharma commences enrollment in multinational ATIR study

Biopharmaceutical company Kiadis Pharma announces today that the first patients have been enrolled in its multinational registration clinical trial with ATIR(TM). The study is designed to show reduction in transplant related mortality (TRM) after one year following an allogeneic stem cell transplantation with a mismatched (haplo-identical) donor in blood cancer patients eligible for an allogeneic stem cell transplantation but without having a matched donor available.

Allos Therapeutics granted U.S. patent for FOLOTYN

Allos Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent for the use of FOLOTYN™ (pralatrexate injection) for the treatment of T-cell lymphoma. U.S. Patent No. 7,622,470 was issued to Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, SRI International and Southern Research Institute, and expires on November 24, 2025.

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals completes enrollment in apaziquone Phase 3 trial

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals today announced that one of the two Phase 3 pivotal clinical trials of apaziquone has achieved its enrollment target, having enrolled approximately 800 patients with non-invasive bladder cancer. The second Phase 3 clinical trial of apaziquone is expected to complete enrollment by the end of the year.

Presentations at Tuesday's RSNA conference

A new study from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center reports that beverage can stay-tabs pose a potential ingestion risk. In the 1970s, U.S. manufacturers switched to the stay-tab design after safety concerns about pull-tabs. The new study found 19 cases of stay-tab ingestion at a single institution, mainly among teenagers.

Novel initiative to improve NMR structure determination

In structural biology, the only technique available to predict the three dimensional structure of large complex molecules in solution, such as proteins and DNA, is NMR spectroscopy. To catalyze improvements in the techniques behind these predictions, the "eNMR" project has launched a new initiative. In September's Nature Methods the project issued an invitation to the entire biomolecular Nuclear Magnetic Resonance community to participate in a large scale test of modern computing algorithms.
