Music stars join hands to show how young people can help build a world without cancer

Some of the nation's rising music stars have joined the nation's first cancer center in an effort to show young people that they can help build a world without cancer. Roswell Park Cancer Institute created a new hip hop song and video called "How Big Is Your Heart." The MTV-like commercial features cancer patients and nurses dancing alongside professional dancers through the halls and lobby of the cancer hospital.

Researchers study the effectiveness of colonoscopy in preventing colorectal cancer

The prevalence of left-sided advanced colorectal neoplasms was lower in participants in a community setting, but not right-sided advanced neoplams, who had received a colonoscopy in the preceding 10 years, according to a new study published online December 30 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Chlorophyll and chlorophyllin effective in limiting aflatoxin absorption in humans

A new study has found that chlorophyll and its derivative chlorophyllin are effective in limiting the absorption of aflatoxin in humans. Aflatoxin is produced by a fungus that is a contaminant of grains including corn, peanuts and soybeans; it is known to cause liver cancer - and can work in concert with other health concerns, such as hepatitis.

U.S. PTO grants reissue patent concerning OSI Pharmaceuticals’ Tarceva

OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (PTO) has granted reissue patent RE41,065, replacing Tarceva’s® (erlotinib) composition of matter patent (formerly No.5,747,498). The Company had applied for the reissue patent in February 2008, and on September 17, 2009 the Company had announced that the PTO had issued a “Notice of Allowance” accepting the Company’s application to correct certain errors relating to the claiming of compounds, other than Tarceva, which had fallen outside of the scope of the main claim of the patent.

TRAP-1 may prevent cancer cell death, current research suggests

Current research suggests that TNF-receptor associated protein-1 (TRAP-1) may prevent cancer cell death. The related report by Leav et al, "Cytoprotective Mitochondrial Chaperone TRAP-1 as a Novel Molecular Target in Localized and Metastatic Prostate Cancer," appears in the January 2010 issue of the American Journal of Pathology.

Phase 3 trial of figitumumab discontinued by Pfizer

Pfizer Inc. announced today the discontinuation of A4021016 (also known as ADVIGO 1016), a Phase 3 trial examining the effects of investigational compound figitumumab (CP-751,871) as first-line treatment in patients with advanced non-adenocarcinoma non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) due to the study meeting predefined boundaries for early termination.

Results from Bionovo's study on BN107 published
