Surgeons perform nation's first incision-free myotomy procedure to treat achalasia

Surgeons at UC San Diego Medical Center have performed the nation's first incision-free myotomy, a procedure to treat achalasia, a distressing disorder which causes difficulty swallowing, regurgitation and chest pain. The innovative surgery, performed through the mouth, is the most recent in a series of groundbreaking clinical trial surgeries being evaluated by the UCSD Center for the Future of Surgery.

New dietary supplement blocks triggering mechanism causing breast cell mutations

Accelerated radiation therapy helps reduce amount of chemotherapy in advanced head and neck cancer patients

Using an accelerated, shorter course of radiation therapy for patients with advanced head and neck cancer allows doctors to reduce the amount of chemotherapy, thus reducing toxicity, according to a study presented at the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium, sponsored by AHNS, ASCO, ASTRO and SNM.

A new analysis published this week in the journal Cancer indicates that misperceptions about risk, symptoms and the lethality of lung cancer may play a role in the disproportionately higher incidence and mortality rates for lung cancer among African Americans.

Regulus Therapeutics, GSK announce new collaboration on microRNA therapeutics targeting microRNA-122

Regulus Therapeutics Inc. today announced the establishment of a new collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to develop and commercialize microRNA therapeutics targeting microRNA-122 in all fields with Hepatitis C Viral infection (HCV) as the lead indication. Under the terms of the new collaboration, Regulus will receive additional upfront and early-stage milestone payments with the potential to earn more than $150 million in miR-122-related combined payments, and tiered royalties up to double digits on worldwide sales of products.

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals receives CHMP advice on OGX-011 development plan in treatment of mCRPC

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals announced today that it has received written, scientific advice from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on the company's development plan for OGX-011 (also known as custirsen) for the treatment of men with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). The input received from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) at the EMA was in overall agreement with OncoGenex's development plan regarding the proposed preclinical studies and both the study designs and analyses for the Phase III trials.

Myeloma Canada calls on Quebec government to approve Revlimid as second-line therapy

The Government of Quebec's Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux has approved the addition of Revlimid(R) (lenalidomide) to the Province's Drug Formulary as a third-line therapy for multiple myeloma patients. The cost of the drug will be reimbursed under the Province's medicare system.
