Environmental health groups call for ban on BPA from all food applications

Environmental health advocates responded to today's announcement that Food and Drug Administration concurs with the National Toxicology Program's assessment that bisphenol A is a chemical of concern. FDA posted tips for parents to minimize children's exposure, and announced further research. BPA is a synthetic sex hormone linked to cancer, behavioral changes, reproductive harm, heart problems and other illnesses.

Researchers identify new gene variants associated With glucose, insulin levels

A major international study with leadership from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers has identified 10 new gene variants associated with blood sugar or insulin levels. Two of these novel variants and three that earlier studies associated with glucose levels were also found to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Along with a related study from members of the same research consortium, associating additional genetic variants with the metabolic response to a sugary meal, the report will appear in Nature Genetics and has been released online.

Regulus Therapeutics Inc. today announced that new pre-clinical data from multiple therapeutic programs were presented at the “RNA Silencing: Mechanism, Biology and Application” Keystone Symposium held January 14 – 19, 2010 in Keystone, Colorado. Regulus and its collaborators presented data showing microRNA target regulation by anti-miRs, as well as data from therapeutic programs focused on oncology, immune disease and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

FDA extends Tarceva's sNDA review period

EMA PDCO grants specific waivers for Gamida Cell-Teva JV's StemEx study in paediatric patients

The Gamida Cell-Teva Joint Venture (JV) announced today that the Paediatric Committee (PDCO) of the EMA has granted product specific waivers for StemEx for all subsets of the paediatric population (birth to 17 years of age) in all conditions. The PDCO emphasized that the granting of the waivers should not prevent the JV from considering developing StemEx for children with conditions where there is a need. StemEx is being developed by a joint venture equally owned and operated by Gamida Cell and Teva Pharmaceuticals ( TEVA).
