CryoLife files PerClot IDE with FDA to initiate clinical trials in the U.S.

CryoLife, Inc., an implantable biological medical device and cardiovascular tissue processing company, announced today that it has filed an IDE with the United States Food and Drug Administration to begin clinical trials for the purpose of obtaining Pre-Market Approval to distribute PerClot in the U.S. to control bleeding during surgical procedures or following traumatic injuries.

All Children's Hospital joins Johns Hopkins Medicine

All Children's Hospital, in St. Petersburg, Fla., is now a part of the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) and a fully integrated member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM). All Children's is the first U.S. hospital outside of the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., region to become integrated with JHM, which includes the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System.

Study reveals increased incidence of major adverse cardiac events in patients with severe psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin disease, and if severe, has been demonstrated to be a risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) disease. However, the degree to which psoriasis is associated with major adverse cardiac events (MACE), such as heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death has not been defined. Now, new research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has revealed an increased incidence of MACE in patients with severe psoriasis.

Coronary computed tomographic angiography to evaluate acute chest pain reduces hospital admissions

Hospital admissions at Stony Brook University Medical Center on Long Island were significantly reduced when using coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) to evaluate patients presenting in the emergency department (ED) with acute chest pain (ACP), according to research results presented during a scientific session at the American College of Cardiology's 60th Annual Scientific Session and Expo in New Orleans on April 3.

Men who consume digoxin have 24% reduced risk of prostate cancer

Johns Hopkins scientists and their colleagues paired laboratory and epidemiologic data to find that men using the cardiac drug, digoxin, had a 24 percent lower risk for prostate cancer. The scientists say further research about the discovery may lead to use of the drug, or new ones that work the same way, to treat the cancer.
