ESC recommends InspireMD MGuard mesh technology for thrombotic lesions

InspireMD Ltd., a medical device company engaged in the development and commercialization of the mesh based MGuard(TM) stent systems, is proud to report that mesh-based protection, is now recommended for use in the new Guidelines of the Task force of Myocardial Revascularization of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). According to the latest European Society of Cardiology Guidelines, published at the ESC Congress last week, "Mesh-based protection may be considered for PCI of highly thrombotic or SVG lesions" - it has received a class IIb recommendation.

Study suggests high cortisol levels may increase cardiovascular mortality risk

High levels of the stress hormone cortisol strongly predict cardiovascular death among both persons with and without pre-existing cardiovascular disease according to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

Quercetin and ferulic acid antioxidants aggravate kidney cancer in severely diabetic rats

Scientists are calling for more research on the possibility that some supposedly healthful plant-based antioxidants - including those renowned for their apparent ability to prevent cancer - may actually aggravate or even cause cancer in some individuals. Their recommendation follows a study in which two such antioxidants - quercetin and ferulic acid - appeared to aggravate kidney cancer in severely diabetic laboratory rats. The study appears in ACS' bi-weekly Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Researchers discover low levels of DHA associated with chronic neurodegenerative disease

UC Irvine researchers have discovered that markedly depleted amounts of an omega-3 fatty acid in brain tissue samples from Alzheimer's patients may be due to the liver's inability to produce the complex fat, also contained in fish-oil supplements.Low levels of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, have been associated with the chronic neurodegenerative disease affecting millions of Americans, but no cause had been identified.

Texas Children's Hospital implants FDA approved transcatheter pulmonary heart valve

Using a newly FDA approved pulmonary valve, Dr. Frank Ing, director of the catheterization laboratory at Texas Children's Hospital and his team of pediatric interventional cardiologists implanted a transcatheter pulmonary heart valve into the heart of a 13-year-old girl, which spared her from having her chest opened for a third heart surgery.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded a $9.1 million, five-year grant to The Ohio State University for a study titled "Expression Genetics in Drug Therapy." "In most parts of the country, data-based ratings of doctors are not available to patients. Only a few states, including New York, provide them.
