Cytori Therapeutics to initiate European medical device approval study for Celution System

The first clinical trial of adipose (fat) tissue-derived stem and regenerative cells for the treatment of heart attacks showed a substantial reduction in the size of injury to the heart, an improvement in the amount of blood supply to the heart muscle, and a corresponding functional improvement in the amount of blood the heart can pump.

Nile Therapeutics completes dose escalation in CD-NP Phase II study for acute decompensated heart failure

Nile Therapeutics, Inc., a company focused on the development of novel therapeutics for heart failure patients, today announced that it has completed the dose escalation stage of an ongoing Phase II study of CD-NP in patients with acute decompensated heart failure. Nile had previously announced that the study, NIL-CDNP-CT005, was expanded to permit additional dose exploration prior to proceeding to larger Phase II studies.

Progestins increase chances of cancer metastasizing: Study

After menopause, 6 to 10 million women take hormone therapies, which are often a combination of estrogen and progestin, to replace hormones lost from inactive ovaries. Progestin is a hormone that is used to counteract the potentially negative effects of estrogen therapy on the uterus. In studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, evidence has been found that estrogen and progestin in hormone therapies increase the risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women.

Cellular Dynamics International, Inc. NHLBI grants MU $8.47 million for research on cardiovascular diseases

One of the largest medical research grants ever awarded to the University of Missouri was announced today by MU scientists and administrators. The National Institutes of Health grant will help answer important questions about such prevalent health problems as high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. The conditions are closely associated with cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in Missouri and the nation.

A new study by researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet shows that the immune defence's T cells can attack the "bad" LDL cholesterol and thereby cause an inflammation that leads to atherosclerosis.

Genzyme to initiate $2 billion stock buyback

Genzyme Corp. today announced that its Board of Directors has voted to pursue several actions to increase shareholder value. The company will initiate a $2 billion stock buyback, under which $1 billion of stock will be repurchased in the near term and financed with debt. The additional $1 billion of stock will be repurchased during the next 12 months.

Australia’s first ever health policy for men

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday announced Australia’s first ever men’s health policy called the “National Male Health Policy”. He said in the announcement during a visit to the Whittlesea Men's Shed in Victoria, “They either think that they're invincible that they can just tough it out…'They don't like talking about it usually, and frankly, the problem with all that is it makes it really hard to deal with men's health problems before they become too serious.” He felt this move was long due. He added, “'It's a pretty important time that we do that, we're probably about 110 years late.”

Investigators demonstrate safety and efficacy of targeted medication to shrink advanced kidney cancers

A multicenter team of investigators led by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has demonstrated, for the first time, the safety and efficacy of a targeted medication to shrink advanced kidney cancers prior to partial kidney removal and reconstruction. Their findings were published in the April 2010 online edition of BJU International.
