Increasingly common insurance plans that encourage patients to receive care from physicians who keep medical costs lower are based on unreliable estimates of doctor performance and may not achieve the intended savings, according to a new RAND Corporation study.

Nearly 14 percent of Medicare beneficiaries admitted with a primary diagnosis of ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) undergo multi-vessel primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), despite recommendations from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association to intervene on only the culprit vessel.

Overall mortality rates from the end of 2007 to the beginning of 2010 at Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Florida have dropped from 3.4 to 2.1. A 1.3-point drop represents a huge reduction for any hospital and translates into lives saved.

FDA approves expanded indication for Boston Scientific's CRT-Ds

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced that the Circulatory System Devices Panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has unanimously recommended approval of an expanded indication for its cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-Ds), including the COGNIS® CRT-D. The panel recommended the expansion include the majority of the studied population of the landmark MADIT-CRT clinical trial, which evaluated the ability of these devices to slow the progression of heart failure in patients with asymptomatic or mild heart failure.

Kaiser Permanente study: Snapshot of the prevalence of extreme obesity in younger children

Extreme obesity is affecting more children at younger ages, with 12 percent of black teenage girls, 11.2 percent of Hispanic teenage boys, 7.3 percent of boys and 5.5 percent of girls now classified as extremely obese, according to a Kaiser Permanente study of 710,949 children and teens that appears online in the Journal of Pediatrics.
