Accelerated radiation therapy helps reduce amount of chemotherapy in advanced head and neck cancer patients

Using an accelerated, shorter course of radiation therapy for patients with advanced head and neck cancer allows doctors to reduce the amount of chemotherapy, thus reducing toxicity, according to a study presented at the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium, sponsored by AHNS, ASCO, ASTRO and SNM.

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals receives CHMP advice on OGX-011 development plan in treatment of mCRPC

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals announced today that it has received written, scientific advice from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on the company's development plan for OGX-011 (also known as custirsen) for the treatment of men with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). The input received from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) at the EMA was in overall agreement with OncoGenex's development plan regarding the proposed preclinical studies and both the study designs and analyses for the Phase III trials.

Lab research targets 'estrogen-receptor positive' breast cancer cells; identifies key protein

In a laboratory study published in the journal Cancer Research, Scott & White Healthcare anatomic pathologist Arundhati Rao, M.D. is a co-investigator looking at the ways in which estrogen can interfere with how chemotherapy does its job in destroying breast cancer cells.

Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and Miami Valley Hospital announced today the formation of the Wright State University & Premier Health Partners Neuroscience Institute to speed the transfer of research discoveries from bench to bedside, improving the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders such as stroke. Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents Eric Fingerhut joined Wright State University and Miami Valley Hospital officials in making the announcement.

Advanced ovarian cancer: Avastin-chemotherapy combination followed by Avastin alone improves PFS

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, today announced that a Phase III study showed the combination of Avastin® (bevacizumab) and chemotherapy followed by maintenance use of Avastin alone increased the time women with previously untreated advanced ovarian cancer lived without the disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS), compared to chemotherapy alone. A preliminary assessment of safety noted adverse events previously observed in pivotal trials of Avastin.

Harbor BioSciences, Inc. today announced that the company has received a notice of allowance from the United States Patent Office of patent claims covering the use of its lead product candidate Apoptone®. The patent claims cover the use of Apoptone to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy. Apoptone (HE3235) is a novel synthetic steroid analog of a dihydrotestosterone metabolite and has been found to stimulate cell death (apoptosis) in animal models of prostate and breast cancers.

Novelos Therapeutics' NOV-002 Phase 3 NSCLC trial fails to meet primary survival endpoint

Novelos Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of therapeutics to treat cancer and hepatitis, today announced that the primary endpoint of improvement in overall survival was not met in Novelos’ pivotal Phase 3 trial in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) studying its lead product, NOV-002, in combination with first-line chemotherapy. Detailed trial results are expected to be presented via appropriate scientific venue later this year.

Over-produced PKC-iota oncogene linked to poor pancreatic cancer patient survival

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic campus in Florida have found that PKC-iota (PKC), an oncogene important in colon and lung cancers, is over-produced in pancreatic cancer and is linked to poor patient survival. They also found that genetically inhibiting PKC in laboratory animals led to a significant decrease in pancreatic tumor growth and spread.
