Family planning, access to safe, legal abortion key to maternal, child health, U.S. Sec. of State says

Following a two-day meeting of foreign ministers from G8 countries in Quebec on Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton "appeared at odds … with [Canadian] Prime Minister Stephen Harper's G8 initiative on maternal and child health, saying family planning, contraception and access to legal, safe abortions were vital elements of maternal health care," Canwest News Service/Ottawa Citizen report (O'Neill, 3/31).

Backpacker problem in Australia - binge drinking and unprotected sex

The tourist season may not be quite as healthy for the locals as it was before. In an eight year old study conducted by the Sydney Sexual Health Care Centre some scary facts have come to light. The study was based on about 5,700 backpackers who belonged mostly to the UK or Ireland and were in their mid twenties.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals receives FDA Orphan Drug designation for GVAX AML Vaccine

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced positive GVAX AML Vaccine results and BioSante’s receipt of Orphan Drug designation from the FDA’s Office of Orphan Products Development for GVAX AML Vaccine in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia. This Orphan Drug designation is the second GVAX cancer vaccine from BioSante to secure FDA orphan drug designation.

Canadian Prime Minister says he's open to including contraception in G8 plan for improving maternal, child health

"Facing a squall of condemnation from aid groups and opposition politicians," following statements by Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon that Canada's G8 maternal and child health initiative would not include family planning, Prime Minister Stephen Harper "disavowed his foreign minister Thursday, promising that the federal government would include contraception programs in its maternal-health foreign-aid initiative," the Globe and Mail reports.

Advance provision of emergency contraception does not decrease pregnancy rates

Providing emergency contraception to women in advance of need does not reduce pregnancy rates, despite increased use and faster use after unprotected sexual intercourse. These are the findings according to a new review published in The Cochrane Library.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the closing of the sale, directly to funds affiliated with two institutional investors, of an aggregate of approximately 10.4 million shares of BioSante’s common stock and warrants to purchase up to approximately 5.2 million shares of its common stock, resulting in gross cash proceeds to BioSante of $18 million.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals enters into securities purchase agreements with Great Point and Deerfield Management

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has received commitments from two institutional investors to purchase $18 million of securities in a registered direct offering. The investors are Great Point Partners, LLC and Deerfield Management Company. BioSante expects to receive net proceeds of approximately $17.5 million after deducting placement agent fees and other offering expenses.

For the second time, unblinded data have been reviewed by the independent DMC of the LibiGel Cardiovascular and Breast Cancer Safety Study. Based on this review, the DMC once again unanimously recommended continuation of the study as described in the FDA-agreed LibiGel safety study protocol, with no modifications.
