Teens from across the United States whose siblings have cystic fibrosis will press their elected officials in Washington, D.C., June 24, to fund drug research and increase access to clinical trials for those with rare diseases.

Aradigm announces $5 million private placement

Aradigm Corporation today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement for the sale of common stock and warrants to three existing shareholders and one new investor in a private placement for aggregate gross proceeds of approximately $5 million. Phase III clinical trial data of Cayston versus TIS in CF patients with P. aeruginosa presented at ECFC 2010

Gilead Sciences, Inc. today announced that its head-to-head Phase III clinical trial of Cayston (aztreonam for inhalation solution) versus tobramycin inhalation solution in cystic fibrosis patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa achieved one of its co-primary endpoints of non-inferiority for mean percent change in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) percent predicted after 28 days of treatment.

Researchers make significant headway in fight against SMA

Researchers at the University of Utah are making strides in understanding and combating a motor neuron disease known as Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The spinal muscular atrophies are a group of inherited diseases that cause progressive degeneration of motor nerves resulting in muscle weakness. The most common form of the disorder, due to the deletion of a critical gene on chromosome 5, is currently the leading cause of inherited infant and child mortality.

A team of researchers led by Elliott Dasenbrook, MD, MHS, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Associate Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at University Hospitals Case Medical Center's Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital today published the findings from a major study about cystic fibrosis survival rates in the June 16 issue of JAMA.

Study sheds light on how IMT improves performance in endurance sports

An Indiana University study found that strengthening inspiratory muscles by performing daily breathing exercises for six weeks significantly reduced the amount of oxygen these same breathing muscles required during exercise, possibly making more oxygen available for other muscles.

GenMark Diagnostics, Inc., a provider of automated, multiplex molecular diagnostic testing systems, announced today that its initial public offering of 4,600,000 shares of its common stock has been priced at $6.00 per share. Vertex reports 75% patients with HCV achieve viral cure with 12-week telaprevir-based combination regimen

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated today announced that 75% of people chronically infected with genotype 1 hepatitis C virus (HCV) who had not previously been treated achieved a sustained viral response (SVR or viral cure) after receiving a 12-week telaprevir-based combination regimen, followed by treatment with pegylated-interferon and ribavirin alone, in the Phase 3 ADVANCE trial.

USPTO issues composition of matter patent for Transave's ARIKACE

Thymosin beta 4 reduces brain tissue damage, improves brain function in rats: Research paper
