Plexxikon announces Phase 1 extension study results of PLX4032 in metastatic colorectal cancer

Plexxikon announced today the results of a Phase 1 extension study in metastatic colorectal cancer that showed clinical activity of PLX4032 as a single agent in this hard-to-treat patient population. PLX4032 is a novel, oral small molecule targeting an oncogenic BRAF mutation found in over 50 percent of melanomas, about 10 percent of colorectal cancers and eight percent of all solid tumors.

Millennium announces data on VELCADE in treatment of patients with amyloidosis

Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company today announced data examining the use of VELCADE in the treatment of patients with relapsed or refractory light chain (AL) amyloidosis. Amyloidosis is a rare condition in which excessive proteins build up in organs or tissues, such as the heart, kidney or liver. These data were presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) held in Chicago, Illinois, June 4-8, 2010.

Vandetanib in combination with chemotherapy improves progression-free survival in patients with lung cancer

When combined with standard chemotherapy, an international Phase III trial has shown that the oral targeted therapy vandetanib improves progression-free survival for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, according to research from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Merck announced today results from a new non-inferiority trial of an antiemetic regimen containing fosaprepitant dimeglumine administered as a single intravenous (IV) 150-mg dose in combination with a 5-HT3 antagonist and dexamethasone compared with a three-day regimen of aprepitant with a 5-HT3 antagonist and dexamethasone for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in patients receiving a first cycle of cisplatin-based chemotherapy.

Tioga commences dosing in Phase 3 trial of asimadoline for diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome

Progenics presents preclinical data on novel monoclonal antibodies against toxins produced by C. difficile

Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the presentation of preclinical data on novel monoclonal antibodies against toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium difficile (C. difficile). Health Canada approves Victoza for treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes

Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate in Canada, with an estimated 3.7 million people expected to be diagnosed by 2020. It is a progressive disease that, if not properly monitored and managed over time, will lead to serious long term complications. Canadians now have a novel treatment available to help them maintain optimal blood glucose levels. Health Canada has approved Victoza (liraglutide), the first GLP-1 analogue, for once-daily administration for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control in combination with metformin or metformin and a sulfonylurea.

Alvine Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing therapeutics for autoimmune/inflammatory diseases, today announced that Abbott Biotech Ventures Inc., has joined Alvine's current investors: Interwest Partners, Panorama Capital, Prospect Venture Partners, Sofinnova Ventures, Black River Asset Management and Flagship Ventures in the company's Series A Extension financing.
