Positive results from BioSante Pharmaceuticals' GVAX Leukemia vaccine human clinical study

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced positive results of a human clinical study that show that its GVAX Leukemia vaccine may be able to reduce or eliminate the last remaining cancer cells in some chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients taking the drug Gleevec (imatinib mesylate).

Great Point and Deerfield invest in BioSante Pharmaceuticals

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the closing of the sale, directly to funds affiliated with two institutional investors, of an aggregate of approximately 10.4 million shares of BioSante’s common stock and warrants to purchase up to approximately 5.2 million shares of its common stock, resulting in gross cash proceeds to BioSante of $18 million.

Bilateral oophorectomy may do more harm than good

Removal of the ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy) while performing a hysterectomy is common practice to prevent the subsequent development of ovarian cancer. This prophylactic procedure is performed in 55% of all U.S. women having a hysterectomy, or approximately 300,000 times each year. An article in the March/April issue of The Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology suggests that this procedure may do more harm than good.

Positive results from international study of Oncotype DX breast cancer RS

Genomic Health, Inc. today announced the publication of positive results from a large international study which demonstrated that the Oncotype DX® breast cancer Recurrence Score® (RS) result is a significant independent predictor of distant recurrence in both node-negative and node-positive, hormone receptor-positive, postmenopausal breast cancer patients who are treated with either anastrozole or tamoxifen.

Exposure to BPA during pregnancy causes permanent abnormalities in uterus of offspring

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have discovered that exposure during pregnancy to Bisphenol A (BPA), a common component of plastics, causes permanent abnormalities in the uterus of offspring, including alteration in their DNA. The findings were reported in the March issue of Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.

A new study has found that one in three early-stage breast cancer patients who received genomic testing when deciding about treatment options felt they did not fully understand their discussions with physicians about their test results and their risk of recurrence. About one in four experienced distress when receiving their test results.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals enters into securities purchase agreements with Great Point and Deerfield Management

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has received commitments from two institutional investors to purchase $18 million of securities in a registered direct offering. The investors are Great Point Partners, LLC and Deerfield Management Company. BioSante expects to receive net proceeds of approximately $17.5 million after deducting placement agent fees and other offering expenses.

A new study, led by researchers at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, demonstrates that acupuncture may be an effective therapy for joint pain and stiffness in breast cancer patients who are being treated with commonly used hormonal therapies.
