A new study has found that tamoxifen, an anti-estrogen breast cancer medication, may reduce an individual's risk of death from lung cancer.

Britain’s cancer rates improve while Denmark scores poorly

It appears that warnings regarding dangers of smoking appear to be having an effect with the UK placed in 22nd position in a world league of highest cancer rates. Figures show that for men, 280 cases per 100,000 people, is 33rd in the world, with France the highest. The rate for British women, however, is 260.5 per 100,000 – the world’s 12th highest, with Denmark top. The UK breast cancer rate for women, which is just over 89, ranks 11th.

COPD patients on LTOT may face high risk of death from cardiovascular disease

Patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who are on long-term oxygen therapy have more to worry about than breathing difficulties. According to a new study by researchers in Sweden, COPD patients on LTOT today face an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease and other non-respiratory ailments.

New data on role of miR-34 tumor suppressor in preventing cancer stem cell development

Mirna Therapeutics, Inc., a leading developer of microRNA (miRNA)-based therapeutics, announced today the publication of new data in the journal Nature Medicine describing the role of the tumor suppressor miRNA, miR-34, in preventing cancer stem cell development. Pfizer Inc. announced today that it has initiated the rolling submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for crizotinib (PF-02341066), an oral first-in-class anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitor for the treatment of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors are ALK-positive. Pfizer expects to complete the submission in the first half of 2011.

Daiichi Sankyo and ArQule initiate enrollment in ARQ 197 Phase 3 trial in NSCLC

Daiichi Sankyo Company, Limited and ArQule, Inc. today announced that the first patient has been enrolled in the Phase 3 trial of ARQ 197, an investigational selective inhibitor of the c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase, in combination with erlotinib, for patients diagnosed with non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have received one or two prior systemic anti-cancer therapies.
