Genomic analysis leads to more effective diagnostic tests, treatment options for prostate cancer: Study

A unique collaboration among physician-scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has yielded the most comprehensive genomic analysis of prostate cancer to date. "Genomic studies in other cancer types have resulted in new drug targets and strategies to classify patients into clinically meaningful subgroups that improve treatment decisions," said senior study author Charles Sawyers, Chair of the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program at MSKCC and a HHMI investigator. "This first -ever database of its type brings us one step closer to achieving that goal in prostate cancer."

Phase I/II clinical trials show crizotinib reduces lung cancer tumors

Patients with a specific kind of lung cancer may benefit from a Phase III clinical trial offered by the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. The new drug, crizotinib, under development by Pfizer, showed dramatic results in reducing lung cancer tumors in some patients during Phase I and II clinical trials.

FDA grants approval for newest version of OnGuard Chest X-ray CAD technology

Riverain Medical announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval for the newest version of the OnGuard Chest X-ray Computer-Aided Detection technology. OnGuard identifies solitary pulmonary nodules that may represent early-stage lung cancer on an existing chest X-ray. This improved performance demonstrates a 73% reduction in false positive marks and 50% higher relative sensitivity compared to the original product.

New Zealanders sucking in more nicotine per cigarette than most other smokers worldwide

Smokers in New Zealand are taking in more nicotine than Australians says a new study. The study found that smokers there have a distinct preference for high nicotine containing brands of cigarettes and have the greatest average amount of tar exposure out of 5,703 smokers in eight countries. Where Australians took 1.36mg of nicotine per cigarette, New Zealanders took in 1.62mg.

OncoGenex initiates Phase 3 Prostate Cancer SATURN Trial

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today the initiation of a Phase 3 registration trial of custirsen sodium (OGX-011/TV-1011), its lead product candidate being developed for the treatment of castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Exelixis announces regaining of rights to develop and commercialize XL184

Exelixis, Inc. today announced that it has regained full rights to develop and commercialize XL184. Exelixis and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company entered into a global development collaboration for XL184, the clinically most advanced MET inhibitor, in December 2008.
