Patients with stage IIIA NSCLC who receive lobectomy have increased overall survival: Research

There's debate about the best treatment approach for patients with certain stages of non-small cell lung cancer, which accounts for about 80 percent of all lung cancers. Patients with early stages of NSCLC are typically treated with surgery, but those with stage IIIA present more of a challenge because they are such a diverse group.

Today, Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) commended Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) for joining Congressman Michael Michaud (D-ME) as cosponsors of the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act (LCMRA), a bi-partisan, bi-cameral bill that establishes the first ever multi-agency, comprehensive research program targeting all aspects of lung cancer.

YM BioSciences initiates enrollment in nimotuzumab trial in brain metastases from NSCLC

YM BioSciences Inc., today announced that the first US patient has been enrolled in its randomized, double-blind trial evaluating nimotuzumab in patients with brain metastases from NSCLC at the Florida Cancer Institute - New Hope. This trial initiation follows recent clearance from the US FDA announced on January 26, 2010 allowing the Company to enroll patients at US clinical sites for two of its international and ongoing randomized, double-blind Phase II trials of nimotuzumab.

Shark cartilage extract shows no benefit for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer

In the first scientific study of its kind, shark cartilage extract, AE-941 or Neovastat, has shown no benefit as a therapeutic agent when combined with chemotherapy and radiation for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, according to researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Washington State Department of Health shows smoking inside homes drops by 61% since 2000

New research released today by the Washington State Department of Health shows the number of people smoking inside homes in our state has declined by 61 percent since 2000. The drop is more than double the overall decline in adult smoking during the same period.
