Study highlights lack of treatment for adolescents with severe mental disorders

A recent study by Merikangas and colleagues published in the January 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry shows that only half of adolescents that are affected with severely impairing mental disorders ever receive treatment for their disorders.

Study highlights utility of CDS for diagnosing major depression

In the last 2010 issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, a new scale for measuring depression in cardiac patients is presented. The Cardiac Depression Scale was initially developed specifically for cardiac patients. Its purpose is to allow measurement over the continuum between low-level depressive symptomatology and major depression.

New research has shown that capsules containing a mixture of fatty acids can help relieve symptoms of PMT or Pre-Menstrual Tension - also known as Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS). Women taking the two gram capsules over six months reported their emotional and physical symptoms becoming far milder than they were before.

Alexza completes FDA review for AZ-004 NDA

Alexza Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it completed an End-of-Review meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA or Agency) for the AZ-004 New Drug Application (NDA), and has received the official FDA minutes from the meeting. In December 2010, Alexza held the End-of-Review meeting in response to a Complete Response Letter (CRL) received in October 2010.

New study unravels neural mechanisms underlying inability to express emotions

This German study demonstrates that the supragenual anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is constantly activated more strongly in alexithymic subjects and that this activation is related to the symptoms of alexithymia and not to associated symptoms such as depression. These findings also support the hypothesis of an altered function of the ACC in alexithymia.

Individuals with intensive educational intervention have better health behaviors: Study

A new study conducted by researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health examines this issue, using data from a the well-known Carolina Abecedarian Project, a randomized control study that enrolled 111 infants in the 1970s and continued to follow them through age 21. Researchers found that individuals who had received the intensive education intervention starting in infancy had significantly better health and better health behaviors as young adults.

As many as one in 16 surgeons reported having suicidal thoughts in the previous year, but few sought help from a mental health clinician, according to a report in the January issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
