High BP may predict dementia in older adults with cognitive impairment

High blood pressure appears to predict the progression to dementia in older adults with impaired executive functions (ability to organize thoughts and make decisions) but not in those with memory dysfunction, according to a report in the February issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Exposure to electronic media is not linked to headaches

Use of most electronic media is not associated with headaches, at least not in adolescents. A study of 1025 13-17 year olds, published in the open access journal BMC Neurology, found no association between the use of computer games, mobile phones or television and the occurrence of headaches or migraines.

Dimebon drug associated with improved cognitive function in patients with Huntington's disease

FDA grants Talecris Biotherapeutics orphan drug designation for Alpha1-Proteinase Inhibitor to treat AAT deficiency

Talecris Biotherapeutics, Inc. announced today that it was granted orphan drug designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the development of an aerosol formulation of Alpha1-Proteinase Inhibitor (Human, A1PI) to treat congenital alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency. AAT deficiency is a chronic, hereditary condition that increases the risk of certain diseases, especially emphysema, which typically emerges in the fourth decade of life. Currently, there are no approved, inhaled treatments available for the treatment of AAT deficiency.

Aradigm Corporation announced today that it received the $4 million milestone payment from Zogenix, Inc. (“Zogenix”) based upon the first commercial sale in the U.S. of SUMAVEL* DosePro* (sumatriptan injection) needle-free delivery system. The Company will receive quarterly royalty payments on all SUMAVEL DosePro sales.
