FDA accepts Eisai's NDA for rabeprazole sodium extended-release 50 mg

Eisai Inc. (Headquarters: Woodcliff Lake, NJ; Chairman and CEO: Hajime Shimizu), a U.S. subsidiary of Eisai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo; President and CEO: Haruo Naito) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted Eisai's New Drug Application for rabeprazole sodium extended-release 50 mg for the healing and maintenance of healing of erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease, and for the treatment of symptomatic GERD.

Raptor Pharmaceutical acquires exclusive license to intellectual property for Huntington's Disease treatment

Raptor Pharmaceutical Corp., announced that the Company has acquired an exclusive worldwide license to intellectual property related to the potential treatment of Huntington's Disease from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and Niigata University in Japan. In addition, Raptor has added Professor Lawrence Steinman, M.D., an inventor on the Weizmann patent, to its Advisory Board.

Excess levels of a protein associated with TNF may produce cognitive decline: Studies

Two new studies suggest that excess levels of a protein associated with inflammation, TNF, may produce cognitive decline. TNF regulates both inflammation and brain function. TNF is elevated in the blood in many autoimmune diseases, and in the fluid surrounding the brain in Alzheimer's disease.

G-coupled protein receptors (GPCRs), also known as 7-transmembrane proteins, constitute the single largest class of therapeutic targets for clinical and investigational drugs. There are ~800 predicted members of this class in the human genome, involved in diverse signaling pathways in a wide array of cells and tissue types. Modulation of GPCR function has proven to have therapeutic benefit in a wide variety of diseases in immunology, neurology, cardiology, and oncology.

Mannitol improves effectiveness of HUCBs in neonatal rat models of cerebral palsy

The sugar-alcohol compound mannitol improved the therapeutic effectiveness of human umbilical cord blood cells injected into neonatal rat models of cerebral palsy, reports a new international study led by the University of South Florida. The mannitol opened the blood-brain barrier by temporarily shrinking the tight endothelial cells that make up the barrier.

FDA grants priority review status to Eisai's eribulin NDA

Eisai Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted priority review status to the company's New Drug Application (NDA) for the investigational agent eribulin mesylate ("eribulin," also known as E7389). Eisai is seeking FDA approval for eribulin in the treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer previously treated with at least two chemotherapy regimens, including an anthracycline and a taxane.

Circumstantial evidence suggests first identified Alzheimer disease patient carried N141I presenilin-2 mutation

Writing the latest pages of an anthropological mystery, scientists propose in this month's Archives of Neurology that it is highly possible that Auguste Deter, the first identified Alzheimer disease patient, carried the N141I presenilin-2 mutation—the same one as in present-day U.S. families descended from German emigrants who settled near the river Volga in Russia.

Positive results reported from Phase IIa clinical trial of intranasal oxytocin for CDH

Trigemina, Inc., a Mountain View based privately-held biopharmaceutical company, reports positive results from a time-based interim analysis of its Phase IIa clinical trial in Chronic Daily Headache. The trial is a collaborative effort between Trigemina and Dr. Egilius Spierings of MedVadis Research Corporation located outside of Boston. The study compares intranasal oxytocin with placebo in patients suffering from CDH.

Neuralstem updates progress of ongoing Phase I human clinical trial for ALS

Neuralstem, Inc. updated the progress of its ongoing Phase I human clinical trial to treat ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease) at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The company announced that, after reviewing the safety data from the first cohort of three patients, the Safety Monitoring Board has approved moving to the next cohort and transplantation of the fourth patient.
