Vegetative patients could be contacted using simple, cheap and portable technique – EEG

Scientists from the UK and Belgium have found a way to communicate with brain damaged patients who appear to be in a vegetative state. Writing in The Lancet medical journal they describe how they measured electrical activity in the brain to detect consciousness. The technique, known as EEG or electroencephalogram, is painless and involves attaching electrodes to the head.

Hand washing in hospitals may keep super bugs away: Report

A recent survey of hospitals has shown that the successful implementation of good hand washing practices in hospitals by nurses and doctors is effective in reducing the drug resistant superbugs. This comes after the introduction of a national program to boost hand hygiene compliance rates in hospitals by encouraging staff to use alcohol-based hand rubs before and after treating patients. To make it easier for hospital workers to clean their hands, alcohol-based hand rubs are being installed at the foot or near the head of every bed.

Victorian nurses protest over ‘lockout dossier’

Victorian hospitals have been provided with a 51-page dossier on how to conduct a lockout of nurses in a move slammed by the Australian Nursing Federation. This dossier was sent by the Hospitals Industry Association last week and includes templates for letters to be sent to nurses if they are to have their pay docked.
