Urinary incontinence after child birth increases risk of postpartum depression

Women with urinary incontinence after giving birth are almost twice as likely to develop postpartum depression as those without incontinence, according to a new study led by Wendy Sword, a professor in McMaster University's School of Nursing.

But the psychological benefits of revealing one's sexual identity -- less anger, less depression, and higher self-esteem - are limited to supportive settings, shows a study published June 20 in Social Psychology and Personality Science.

FDA approves NULOJIX

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved NULOJIX, the first selective T-cell costimulation blocker indicated for the prophylaxis of organ rejection in adult patients receiving a kidney transplant, in combination with basiliximab induction, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and corticosteroids.

Study shows high increase in healthcare costs associated with falls

During the winter of 2009-2010 the average temperature for the UK was 1.6 degrees centigrade, making it the coldest recorded winter in the last 30 years. Using winter data from 2005 to 2010, new research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Environmental Health demonstrates an inverse relationship between temperature and the number of falls on snow and ice, which result in emergency admission to hospital, and looks at the cost of these falls.

Celgene announces data from REVLIMID plus rituximab Phase II study on malignant lymphomas

Celgene International Sàrl announced that clinical data from a Phase II study, conducted by investigators from the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, evaluating the combination regimen of REVLIMID plus rituximab (R2) in untreated, advanced stage, indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, were presented at the 11th International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma in Lugano, Switzerland.

Nurses’ dress codes prescribed

A hospital trust has come up with warnings regarding nurses’ uniforms and advised them against wearing clothes that expose their “midriff” or “excessive cleavage”. East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has issued a new uniform policy for all staff, with guidance on shoes, clothing, hair length and colour. They have added that any member of staff who does not adhere to the policy could be subject to disciplinary action.

When Dorothy Jambrosek, 47, decided to donate a kidney to a stranger, she didn't realize that her goodwill would save her own life. After undergoing a series of tests required to give a kidney, doctors discovered that Jambrosek had precancerous lesions in her breast that could become cancerous.
