UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and the department of urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA have been notified that their standing as a National Cancer Institute Specialized Program of Research Excellence site in prostate cancer has been renewed for another five years.

FDA grants orphan-drug designation for Ligand’s Captisol-enabled Topiramate Injection

Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted orphan-drug designation for its proprietary Captisol-enabled Topiramate Injection for the treatment of partial onset or primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in hospitalized epilepsy patients who are unable to take oral topiramate.

Thanks to a new $2 million investment, a drug that spurs cancer cells to self-destruct while sparing healthy cells is on the road to human clinical trials. The compound, known as PAC-1, has so far proven safe and has promising anti-cancer effects in cell culture, in mouse models of cancer and in pet dogs with spontaneously occurring lymphomas and osteosarcomas.

We classified ‘long-term’ cannabis use as being regular, at least weekly, cannabis use for over 12 months. This is the period of time that’s used in the DSM-IV psychiatric diagnostic manual to classify substance use disorders. In our study the average duration of at least weekly use was just over four and a half years.
