LPHC to acquire Santos Administraçāo e Participações regional healthcare system in Brazil

LONDON PACIFIC & PARTNERS, INC., the international advisory and investment firm, today announced that LP Healthcare Group, LLC (“LPHC”), a joint venture between London Pacific and Incite Financial, LLC, has signed an agreement to acquire Santos Administraçāo e Participações S.A. (“Santos”) — a regional healthcare system including a 125,000-member health maintenance organization (HMO) , three hospitals with a total of 290-beds, three full-service primary care centers and other related interests in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The three hospitals include a 250-bed comprehensive regional hospital and two local hospitals.

Sitting in reclined position may help alleviate back pain

Here's some news that 80 percent of the U.S. population should take sitting down. According to a nationwide survey, a majority (68 percent) of primary care physicians say they are likely to recommend that a patient sit in a reclined position to help alleviate back pain – a suggestion that should come as welcome news to the 8 out of every 10 Americans who will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.

Chronically ill older adults who are closely supported by a nurse-physician primary care team are twice as likely to rate their health care as high-quality than those who receive usual care, according to a study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Study examines how opioid overdose differs by prescribed dose for chronic pain conditions

More and more Americans with chronic pain not caused by cancer are taking medically prescribed opioids like Oxycontin (oxycodone) and Vicodin (hydrocodone). The January 19 Annals of Internal Medicine features the first study to explore the risk of overdose in patients prescribed opioids for chronic noncancer pain in general health care.

As most sectors of the economy shed jobs last month, health care companies continued to defy the pattern and hire more people in a trend that's spanned more than two years, Kaiser Health News reports. The main reason is that people are reluctant to skip health care services, even when times are tight, economists say. That factor, combined with an aging population allowed health care business to grow, albeit more slowly than normal, even as the broader economy flagged (Weaver, 1/8).
