Indoor tanning devices: AADA testifies before FDA panel on needed classification changes and calls for ban

American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) President and dermatologist William D. James, MD, FAAD, along with other dermatologists and leading researchers today testified before a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel considering changes to the current classification of indoor tanning devices. Currently, the FDA classifies indoor tanning devices as Class 1, the category for items that have minimal potential to cause harm to individuals. Items in Class 1 include adhesive bandages and tongue depressors.

The Food and Drug Administration may tighten restrictions on tanning beds "amid evidence they raise the risk of skin cancer beyond exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun," The Wall Street Journal reports.

Skin cancer prevention measure increases hat use among fourth-graders

A sun protection intervention program that encouraged fourth-graders to wear hats outdoors as a skin cancer prevention measure significantly increased hat use at school, a study by researchers at the University of South Florida College of Medicine found. The program, however, had no effect on self-reported hat use at home or on measures of skin pigmentation.

Found in the cell membrane, this protein activates a signalling pathway that regulates the expression of genes that make the cell divide, grow, migrate, specialise or die.

New Maryland legislation protects minors from cancer risks caused by UV-radiation of indoor tanning

New Maryland legislation to protect youth from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is based on significant scientific evidence that indoor tanning before the age of 30 is undeniably linked to increased risk of developing the disease. Senator James N. Robey and Delegate William A. Bronrott represent a broad-based coalition of 20 legislators in the Senate and House co-sponsoring cross-filed bills SB 718 and HB 1039 to prohibit minors' use of tanning devices in tanning facilities and prevent any marketing offers of these services to minors.

Phase III study demonstrates superiority of imiquimod cream 2.5% and 3.75% in treatment of AK

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) has published Phase III data evaluating the safety and efficacy of imiquimod cream at two doses - 2.5% and 3.75% - administered daily on a 2-week treatment cycle. The study demonstrates that both formulations were superior to placebo, and that imiquimod 3.75% on a daily 2-week treatment cycle is superior to imiquimod 2.5% in treating actinic keratosis (AK) on a large surface area - the face or balding scalp.
