OncoSec announces additional evaluation of ElectroImmunotherapy Phase I trial on melanoma

OncoSec Medical Incorporated, which is developing its advanced-stage ElectroOncology therapies to treat solid tumor cancers, announced today that additional evaluation of a previous Phase I trial provided further evidence that a DNA plasmid encoded to produce IL-12 delivered by electroporation into melanoma lesions induces responses to known and novel antigens, resulting in regression of local treated lesions as well as distant untreated lesions.

Survivors of childhood cancer at increased risk of developing subsequent primary neoplasms

In a study that included nearly 18,000 children who had cancer, with follow-up of about 25 years, the greatest excess risk associated with a subsequent primary neoplasm (a new tumor) at older than age 40 years was for digestive and genitourinary neoplasms (related to the genital or urinary tract organs), according to a study in the June 8 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on cancer.

NCIC CTG's exemestane clinical trial data on breast cancer presented at ASCO 2011

A large international Canadian-led clinical trial investigating a new way to prevent breast cancer in women at increased risk of developing the disease has found that the drug exemestane reduces this risk by 65 per cent compared with placebo.

Positive results from Plexxikon's vemurafenib Phase 2 and 3 trial against metastatic melanoma

Plexxikon Inc., a member of the Daiichi Sankyo Group, today announced efficacy and safety data from the BRIM3 trial, a large, randomized, multi-center Phase 3 clinical study of vemurafenib in patients with previously untreated metastatic melanoma with the BRAFV600 mutation.

From the legislatures: Calif. Assembly passes rate regulation bill; Wis. lawmakers vote to raise health costs for new firefighters, police

The state Assembly approved a bill Thursday that would give state regulators the power to reject or modify excessive health insurance premium increases similar to the way auto and homeowner insurance is regulated in California. Lawmakers voted 47-28 to approve the measure after Republican legislators walked off the floor in protest. AB52 now moves to the state Senate.

NEJM publishes ZYTIGA plus prednisone Phase 3 trial data in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer

A study titled "Abiraterone and Increased Survival in Metastatic Prostate Cancer," published in the May 26 issue of NEJM, found that patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who have received prior chemotherapy containing docetaxel showed a significant improvement in overall survival when treated with ZYTIGA plus prednisone compared to patients treated with prednisone plus placebo.

The American Academy of Dermatology today reiterated the safety and effectiveness of sunscreens to protect against the damaging effects from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Shave biopsies accurate in initial diagnosis of suspicious skin lesions

A shave biopsy is a reasonably safe and accurate method for the initial diagnosis of melanoma, according to a study published in the April issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. In the past, some physicians have criticized shave biopsies for not providing accurate T (tumor) stage information, thereby complicating treatment planning.

The John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center's Cutaneous Malignancies Program has partnered with The Promise Foundation to host a skin cancer screening event on Thursday, June 2 from 10am -5pm. This program will feature educational information on skin cancer prevention and offer free skin cancer screenings by appointment only for the community.
