Diabetes people with low levels of physical activity are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease

The risk of cardiovascular complications in people with type 2 diabetes is directly related to the frequency and duration of physical exercise, according to results of a large follow-up study reported today on World Diabetes Day. Notably, those with low levels of physical activity had a 70% greater risk of cardiovascular death than those with higher levels.

Stanford bariatric program experiences lower hospital readmission rates

The bariatric program at Stanford University saw hospital readmission rates drop by 75 percent and surgical-site infections decline by 60 percent after changes in patient education, discharge planning and pre-operative procedures, according to a new study* presented here at the 30th Annual Meeting for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery during ObesityWeek 2013, the largest international event focused on the basic science, clinical application and prevention and treatment of obesity. Obesity, overweight are risk factors for MI and IHD regardless of metabolic syndrome

Being overweight or obese are risk factors for myocardial infarction (heart attack) and ischemic heart disease (IHD) regardless of whether individuals also have the cluster of cardiovascular risk factors known as metabolic syndrome, which includes high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar, according to a study published by JAMA Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Initial results of a first and largest of its kind study focusing on the safety of adolescent bariatric surgery were published this week in JAMA Pediatrics. The "Teen Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery" study is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is being conducted at five sites in the U.S., including Nationwide Children's Hospital.
