Global Campaign for Microbicides praises CAPRISA 004 gel trial for women's HIV prevention

Results of an advanced clinical trial of an antiretroviral-based microbicide candidate are being announced at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria. The CAPRISA 004 trial, which tested the safety and effectiveness of 1% tenofovir gel among nearly 900 women at two sites in South Africa, found that using the gel before and after sex provided moderate protection against sexually transmitted HIV.

Twenty years after the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, there is finally a "tool kit" for non-experts to measure whether public facilities are in compliance.This is designed to meet the needs of anyone who is reasonably intelligent but not necessarily a techie,explains Denis Anson, director of research for the Assistive Technology Research Institute (ATRI) at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania, and the kit's developer.

AVAC applauds CAPRISA 004 microbicide gel trial for preventing sexual transmission of HIV infection

The CAPRISA 004 results are the first clinical evidence that a microbicide gel can help to prevent sexual transmission of HIV infection," said AVAC Executive Director Mitchell Warren, reacting to the results of the landmark microbicide trial presented today at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna.

Bi-monthly journal on neurovirology from Springer

Starting in January 2011, Springer will publish the Journal of NeuroVirology, a bi-monthly publication closely affiliated with the International Society for NeuroVirology. Previously published by Taylor & Francis/Informa, the five-year contract with Springer runs to 2015.

Athletes who undergo tissue transplant surgery for knee damage can return to sports: Study

Athletes with bone and cartilage knee damage who are treated with transplanted tissue can return to sports after surgery, according to a Hospital for Special Surgery study reported at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, held July 15-18 in Providence, Rhode Island. The study (abstract 8970) overturns the widely held belief that patients who undergo this surgery do not return to athletics.
