HHS anounces availability of $1M in grants per state and calls for public input on health insurance Exchanges

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced two key steps in the process of partnering with states and other stakeholders to begin establishing health insurance Exchanges. HHS announced the availability of up to $1 million in grants per state to help states begin work to establish Exchanges and published a request for comment calling for public input as HHS develops standards for the Exchanges.

Professional in-person interpreters improve patient satisfaction in the ER: Study

Patients who are not proficient in English and provided with professionally trained, in-person interpreters in the emergency department report higher satisfaction with their communication in the ER, as do the physicians treating them, according to the results of a randomized controlled trial released this week online in Annals of Emergency Medicine ("Examining Effectiveness of Medical Interpreters in Emergency Departments for Spanish-Speaking Patients with Limited English Proficiency: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial").

Gilead Sciences, Inc. today announced the closing of its sale of $1.1 billion aggregate principal amount of 1.00% convertible senior notes due 2014 and $1.1 billion aggregate principal amount of 1.625% convertible senior notes due 2016 to qualified institutional buyers in accordance with Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended. The net proceeds from this offering were approximately $2.166 billion, after deducting estimated discounts, commissions and expenses.

Study uses text messages to increase medication compliance in adolescent diabetes patients

Jennifer Dyer, MD, MPH, an endocrinologist at Nationwide Children's Hospital, has developed and completed a pilot study that uses weekly, customized text messages to remind adolescent diabetes patients about their personal treatment activities. At the conclusion of the study, Dr. Dyer found an increase in overall treatment adherence and improved blood glucose levels.
