The Wall Street Journal: "Linda Roberts thought she would enjoy lifetime health benefits after a dozen years lifting radiators and iron in a factory for Visteon Corp. But the car-parts maker won bankruptcy-court approval to terminate those retiree benefits, just months after Ms. Roberts, 62 years old, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and leukemia.

NIEHS procures Provantis preclinical software solution for National Toxicology Program studies

New implantable device to prevent sudden cardiac arrest

Northwestern Memorial Hospital heart rhythm specialists recently gave a 34-year-old man a makeshift paramedic—who's always on duty—inside of his chest by implanting a device that did not require X-ray assistance and the usual snaking of wires leading to the heart. In fact, the innovative device rests just beneath the surface of the skin and its components are positioned using the patient's own anatomical landmarks.

European Association of Urology to publish first case series on RALP

In European Urology, the official journal of the European Association of Urology, a new section will be published as of the September issue: Case Series of the month. This series is dedicated to publishing promising studies which have so far only preliminary results. The Case Series reports on no more than 10 patients and includes illustrative images. A Continuing Medical Education question with multiple choice answers is also included to enable readers to earn CME points.

Researchers develop new implantable metamaterials to destroy cancerous tissue

The research, reported online July 21, 2010, in the journal Advanced Materials, provides a promising path towards the development of a new class of metamaterial-inspired implantable biosensors and biodetectors.Metamaterials are artificial electromagnetic composites, typically made of highly conducting metals, whose structures respond to electromagnetic waves in ways that atoms in natural materials do not. The most futuristic metamaterials would absorb all light, to create heat to destroy cancerous tissue, or bend light completely around an object, rendering that object invisible-an imaginary delight for fans of science fiction or spy novels.

A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network, Institut M-rieux and bioM-rieux partner in TB research

An investment of S$3 million is being pumped into tuberculosis (TB) research by A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN), bioindustrial group Institut M-rieux and its in vitro diagnostics company bioM-rieux. The project, which involves setting up a joint laboratory in Biopolis, Singapore aims to investigate and identify novel biomarkers that could allow early identification of individuals at risk of TB disease development and disease reactivation. This could lead to better diagnosis and treatment for the highly contagious disease.

Gore announces first implantation in IDE clinical study of ACUSEAL Vascular Graft in hemodialysis patients

W. L. Gore & Associates reported that the first patient, in an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical study evaluating the self sealing GORE® ACUSEAL Vascular Graft in patients on hemodialysis, has been surgically implanted with the device. The successful surgical procedure was performed on July 29, 2010 at Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, South Carolina. Less than 24 hours after the device was implanted it was successfully cannulated or punctured for initial hemodialysis access.

Stanley awards $15 million to provide operation, infrastructure support for Nationwide Health Information Network

Stanley, Inc., a leading provider of systems integration and professional services to the U.S. federal government, today announced that it was awarded two time-and-materials contracts valued at $15 million, with exercise of options, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). These two awards follow an award from DHHS that the company announced on August 2, 2010, to provide operation and infrastructure support for the Nationwide Health Information Network.
