Aptium Oncology to provide administrative services at new Beth Israel Comprehensive Cancer Center

Offering greater access to cancer care services for Manhattan West Side residents in New York, Beth Israel Medical Center has opened the Beth Israel Comprehensive Cancer Center - West Side Campus in the facility formerly known as St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center (SVCCC). The facility, which originally opened in 1996, was one of a few Saint Vincent's outpatient services units untouched and left open when the iconic hospital closed its doors on April 30, 2010. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony launched the center on Wednesday, July 14, 2010.

Underwriters exercise over-allotment option in Uroplasty's common stock public offering

Uroplasty, Inc. announced today that the underwriters for the recently announced public offering of Uroplasty common stock have exercised in full their over-allotment option to purchase an additional 600,000 shares of the Company's common stock. The 4,600,000 shares of Uroplasty common stock in the offering, including the 600,000 shares subject to the over-allotment option, are being sold at a price to the public of $3.50 per share.

Medtronic glucose monitoring device helps owners manage pets’ diabetes

The treatment of diabetes was revolutionized in 1922 when insulin was isolated from dogs. Since then, significant advances in human medicine have made diabetes more manageable for patients. Now, human medicine has returned the favor and used these advances to help dogs with diabetes. A University of Missouri researcher is using a continuous glucose monitoring device - commonly used in humans with diabetes - to help treat dogs and other animals. The device, which provides a detailed glucose picture of an animal over several days, will help pet owners manage their pets' diabetes.

Experts available for comment on new medicare contracts that drive health care hookups

So-called "accountable care organizations" or ACOs might change the way that the agency running Medicare does business. An article in the Indiana Business Journal explains that the new health reform law requires the agency to sign new "shared savings" contracts with ACOs and gives examples of how these organizations work. ACOs can begin doing business with Medicare in January 2012.

IDC secures $32 million in Series B financing

Immune Design Corp. (IDC), a privately held biotechnology company focused on developing novel vaccines and immunotherapies for infectious disease and cancer, announced today that it has secured $32 million in Series B financing. The round was led by ProQuest Investments and was joined by current investors: The Column Group, Versant Ventures, and Alta Partners. The Series B financing brings the total amount of equity capital raised by IDC to $50 million since its inception in 2008.

Council seeks to limit medical resident working hours for improved patient care

As the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education seeks to improve patient care by further limiting the hours worked by medical residents, the Journal of Surgical Research will published a new study online on Monday reporting that outcomes in two common surgeries - appendectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy - were similar among residents who had worked less than 16 hours and those who had worked more than 16 hours.

School program to help children continue normal educational activities during treatment

Treatment for cancer and other catastrophic disease can last months or years and often makes it impossible for young patients to keep up with their local school curriculum. Teachers in the St. Jude School Program Presented by Target help patients continue their normal educational activities while away from their local schools. They are also part of the health care team that provides opportunities to continue normal educational activities through homebound or hospital-bound educational services. In addition, the team provides school re-entry services to ease the transition back to the community school.

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) is concerned that interpretations of a paper about cholesterol, published in the Lancet, could act to deter ongoing research efforts into developing new therapeutic strategies to increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
