bitop AG, a biotech company specializing in the development of Ectoin®-containing medical devices, reports that Ectoin allergy nasal spray has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms of acute allergic rhinitis in a two-week observational, randomized, comparative crossover study with 50 patients suffering from acute allergic rhinitis. Based on this study, bitop performed a clinical trial on eyes drops and nasal spray in humans using an environmental exposure chamber (EEC) model.

Deaths from heroin overdoses in Chicago's Cook County fall 16%: Study

A new study by Roosevelt University's Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy shows deaths from heroin overdoses in Chicago's Cook County fell 16 percent during the last decade, but the Chicago metropolitan region still ranks among the worst in the nation for heroin use. Kimberly Dennis, M.D., eating disorder specialist at Chicago's Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, sees the use of heroin regularly from women and girls she treats and knows the importance of awareness and seeking help to overcome this addiction.

Biogen Idec and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum today announced that they plan to advance the companies' long-lasting, fully-recombinant factor VIII Fc fusion protein (rFVIIIFc) into a registrational clinical trial in people with hemophilia A. The decision to advance the program is based on promising data from a Phase 1/2a open-label, cross-over, multi-center, dose-escalation study that evaluated the safety and pharmacokinetics of an intravenous injection of rFVIIIFc in 16 previously-treated patients with severe hemophilia A.

Experts use Mexican aquatic salamander to study evolution and genetics of stem cells

Dr Andrew Johnson is speaking today (12 July) at the UK National Stem Cell Network annual conference. He and his team from the University of Nottingham have been using a Mexican aquatic salamander called an axolotl to study the evolution and genetics of stem cells - research that supports the development of regenerative medicine to treat the consequences of disease and injury using stem cell therapies. This team has found that there are extraordinary similarities in the development of axolotls and mammals that provide unique opportunities to study the properties of embryonic stem cells and germ cells.
