ATS Medical shareholders approve acquisition by Medtronic

ATS Medical, Inc. today announced that its shareholders approved Medtronic, Inc.'s acquisition of ATS Medical for $4.00 per share in cash for each share of ATS Medical stock, which per share amount is subject to decrease in the limited circumstances described in the Agreement and Plan of Merger, dated April 28, 2010, between ATS Medical, Inc., Medtronic, Inc. and Pilgrim Merger Corporation.

Multimedia programs increase vegetable intake in kindergarten children

Popeye cartoons, tasting parties and junior cooking classes can help increase vegetable intake in kindergarten children, according to new research published in the journal Nutrition & Dietetics. Researchers at Mahidol University in Bangkok found the type and amount of vegetables children ate improved after they took part in a program using multimedia and role models to promote healthy food.

A strength training technique called autoregulatory progressive resistance exercise —in which athletes increase strength by progressing at their own pace—provides better results than standard techniques in which resistance is steadily increased, reports a study in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning, official research journal of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

President Barack Obama has announced his intention to fill two more leadership positions at USAID, Foreign Policy's "The Cable" blog reports. According to the blog, Donald Steinberg has been tapped as USAID deputy administrator and Nancy Lindborg as assistant administrator for the USAID Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Affairs Bureau.

Emeritus announces closure of Sunwest purchase and sale transaction

Emeritus Corporation, a national provider of assisted living and memory care services to seniors, today announced that the Sunwest purchase and sale transaction has closed. The previously announced joint venture between affiliates of Emeritus, Blackstone Real Estate Advisors (an affiliate of The Blackstone Group), and Columbia Pacific Advisors, completed the transaction on August 5, 2010.

Bloomberg Businessweek explores growing trend in pharma to license, donate HIV drugs

"Pharmaceutical companies, once blasted as uncaring or downright greedy for charging thousands of dollars for a year's worth of AIDS medicines … in poor countries, lately have been slashing prices and licensing their drugs for free or nominal cost to nonprofits or local manufacturers in the developing world," Bloomberg BusinessWeek writes in an analysis piece that examines how this trend, combined with a growing capability among aid agencies to distribute drugs, has the potential to increase access to HIV/AIDS drugs worldwide.

Catholic Charities USA releases statement in response to passage of Child Nutrition Bill

While Catholic Charities USA strongly supports increased funding for improvements to Child Nutrition Programs, we are opposed to cutting funds from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to pay for these new investments. As one of the nation's largest networks of social service providers, we simply cannot pit one program that serves the poor and vulnerable against another program that serves the same population.

Clinical trials in Asia, Africa confirm safety, effectiveness of rotavirus vaccine

Two studies published online Thursday in the Lancet show that the rotavirus vaccine is safe and effective at preventing much of the gastrointestinal illness in developing countries, where rotavirus kills more than 400,000 children under age 5 annually, Reuters reports. Based on the findings in Asia and Africa, the studies' authors "urged the governments of developing nations to make the vaccines a priority," the news service writes.

FDA confirms Advisory Committee meeting date for lorcaserin NDA review

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Eisai Inc. announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has notified the company of the confirmed scheduling of an Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee meeting on September 16, 2010, for the review of the lorcaserin New Drug Application (NDA). Lorcaserin, which Arena discovered and has developed for weight management, is intended for obese patients as well as overweight patients who have at least one weight-related co-morbid condition.

FDA seeks ban on Regenerative Sciences for violating cGMP

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking an injunction in federal court against Regenerative Sciences LLC, of Broomfield, Colo., citing violations of current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) that cause its cultured cell product to be adulterated. The product is also misbranded due to the lack of adequate directions for use and the failure to bear the "Rx only" symbol.

Elekta receives Surescripts certification for MOSAIQ oncology information system

With health care providers' desire to increase accuracy, lower costs and increase efficiency, e-prescription use in the United States is exploding. Surescripts reports that by the end of 2009, approximately 18 percent of eligible prescriptions were prescribed electronically compared with just 6.6 percent at the end of 2008. And, the number of prescriptions routed electronically jumped from 68 million in 2008 to 191 million in 2009.

KFH/HP report combined total operating revenue of $11.0 billion for second-quarter 2010

Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., and their respective subsidiaries reported today a combined total operating revenue of $11.0 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2010, compared to $10.5 billion in the same period in 2009. Operating income was $313 million in the second quarter of 2010, compared to $411 million in the same quarter last year.

Chemed declares quarterly cash dividend

Chemed Corporation announced today that the Board of Directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of 14-cents per share on the Company's capital stock, payable on September 7, 2010, to shareholders of record as of August 16, 2010. This is a 2-cent, or 16.7%, increase over the 12-cent dividend paid in the second quarter of 2010. The previous dividend increase was in August 2009, when the Board raised the dividend from 6-cents to 12-cents per share. This represents the 157th consecutive quarterly dividend paid by Chemed in its 39 years as a public company.
