NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the sale of its royalty rights from sales of REGPARA® (cinacalcet HCl) to a fund managed by DRI Capital, Inc., (Fund) for $38.4 million. Royalties in excess of cumulative royalties of $96 million or 2.5 times the upfront purchase price have been retained by NPS.

ICU survivors face high risk of death in following years, says study

An analysis of Medicare data indicates that elderly patients who are hospitalized in an intensive care unit (ICU) and survive to be discharged from the hospital have a high rate of death in the following three years, and that, in particular, patients who receive mechanical ventilation have a substantially increased rate of death compared with both hospital and general population controls in the first several months after hospital discharge, according to a study in the March 3 issue of JAMA.

A two-year study led by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) found that healthy, long-term weight loss diets can significantly reverse carotid (main brain artery) atherosclerosis, a direct risk factor for strokes and heart attacks. The study is one of the first to prove the potential of moderate weight loss as a strategy to reverse atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) in overweight and mildly obese people.

California consumer group sues Anthem Blue Cross for changing policies and then raising rates

Consumer Watchdog and other plaintiffs are suing Anthem Blue Cross, the California insurer that recently told policyholders it would hike premiums by 39 percent, the Los Angeles Times reports. The paper says the suit, which could gain class-action status, alleges that Anthem has violated "state law by closing certain policies to new members while illegally offering remaining customers alternative plans with fewer benefits at higher rates" (Helfand, 3/2).
