'Crowding' helps see things better

'Crowding', the phenomenon when people are less able to differentiate letters if they are surrounded by other letters, actually leads to better vision. This is the conclusion of Dr Frans Cornelissen, who together with Dr Ronald van den Berg and Prof. Jos Roerdink is the first to succeed in explaining crowding with a mathematical model. 'At this moment in time our model is mainly interesting in a fundamental sense', says Cornelissen. 'In the long term, however, it may acquire practical applications, for example when designing learning material for children with dyslexia.'

Researchers say the findings highlight the vital need for better secondary stroke prevention. The study is published in the February 16, 2010, issue of Neurology-, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Prestigious journal suppressing dissenting evidence favoring unnecessary cervical biopsy industry, complains HiFi DNA Tech president

Connecticut Pathologist Sin Hang Lee, MD, has filed a complaint with the international Council of Science Editors alleging the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine (Journal) is suppressing dissenting evidence in favor of a $10 billion “unnecessary cervical biopsy industry that protects special interest groups.”

Progressive walking reduces arthritic pain, improves physical function

"Progressive walking" combined with glucosamine sulphate supplementation has been shown to improve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Researchers writing in BioMed Central's open-access journal Arthritis Research and Therapy found that patients who walked at least two bouts of 1500 steps each on three days of the week reported significantly less arthritis pain, and significantly improved physical function.

Teva Pharmaceuticals USA settles famciclovir patent litigation with Novartis

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. today announced that its subsidiary, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., has signed an agreement with Novartis to settle patent litigation involving Teva’s U.S. generic version of Novartis’ Famvir® (famciclovir) 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg tablets including all claims for patent infringement and damages. Teva launched its generic famciclovir tablets in the U.S. in September 2007.

U.S. Department of Labor awards $4.95M grant for BRIDGE biotechnology project

San Diego State University, BIOCOM, San Diego Workforce Partnership, and the Southern California Biotechnology Center at Miramar College today announced the award of a three-year, $4.95 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor aimed at assisting the economic growth of the San Diego region's life sciences industry. The Biotechnology Readiness, Immersion, Certification and Degrees for Gainful Employment (BRIDGE) project will provide education, training, and placement services to more than 1,000 veterans, incumbent workers and dislocated and unemployed workers within the San Diego region.

UCSF researchers have discovered that a protein called B1N1 is necessary for the heart to contract. The findings, published in the Feb. 16 issue of the open access journal PLoS Biology, shed light not only on what makes a heart beat but also on heart failure, a disease where cardiac cells are no longer able to contract and pump blood through the body.

Altarum Institute awarded $19.6M ARRA funds to serve as lead agent in establishing M-CEITA

Ann Arbor-based Altarum Institute has been awarded a grant of $19,619,990 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to serve as the lead agent in establishing Michigan’s health information technology regional extension center, the Michigan Center for Effective IT Adoption (M-CEITA, www.mceita.org). The grant will be administered through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and managed and sponsored by Altarum. It is expected to create over 100 new jobs in Michigan.

Sinovac Beijing expands production capacity with acquisition of buildings and land use rights in Changping

Sinovac Biotech Ltd. (SVA), a leading China-based vaccine manufacturer, today announced the completion by its subsidiary, Sinovac Beijing, of the acquisition of buildings and land use rights. The total consideration for the purchase is approximately RMB120 million ($17.6 million), which will be financed from working capital. Researchers identify potential therapeutic targets for treatment of neuroblastoma

A team of researchers, led by Patrick Mehlen, at Universit- de Lyon, France, has identified the protein NT-3 and the cell-surface molecule to which it binds (TrkC) as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of neuroblastoma - the most frequent solid tumor in young children- by studying human neuroblastoma cells in vitro and after xenotransplantation into mice and chicks.

Genous Bio-engineered R stent beneficial for patients not suitable for long term DAPT

OrbusNeich announced that clinical data presented at the Joint Intervention Meeting (JIM) 2010 in Rome provide further evidence that the company's Genous stent could be a treatment of choice for patients not suitable for long term dual antiplatelet therapy. The investigator initiated, 50 patient, multicenter study evaluated the safety of patients receiving only 10 days dual antiplatelet therapy undergoing stenting with the Genous Bio-engineered R stent. The primary endpoint was the absence of stent thrombosis or any occlusion within three months.
