On April 15, 2005 the UCLA AIDS Institute will host a full day symposium on AIDS in Africa entitled Integrating HIV Prevention and Care in Africa: Existing Challenges and Innovative Solutions.

The Honorable Stephen Lewis, United Nations Special Envoy HIV/AIDS in Africa and Laurie Garrett, the only writer ever to have been awarded all three of the Big "Ps" of journalism: The Peabody, The Polk and The Pulitzer and currently the Senior Fellow for Global Health, Committee on Foreign Relations, will deliver keynote addresses. Integrating HIV Prevention and Care in Africa: Existing Challenges and Innovative Solutions is the only conference of its kind that will bring together all of the parties who have a stake in Africa. Representatives from South Africa, Rwanda, Angola and Uganda will join HIV/AIDS specialists from Drew University and the UCLA AIDS Institute to discuss measures individuals, governments, foundations, and corporations can take to contain the viral firestorm that is sweeping across sub-Saharan Africa.

Discussion topics include:

  • Using Cultural Beliefs and Systems to Strengthen Prevention and Care in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Prevention and Care in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings
  • Corporate and Foundation Response to AIDS in Africa

Integrating HIV Prevention and Care in Africa showcases partnerships and programs that differ considerably in scale, but share the common goal of arresting the insidious spread of HIV infection in Africa. The UCLA AIDS Institute recognizes that this goal can only be achieved through the coordinated efforts of all of those who have a stake in the campaign to contain the HIV pandemic. For this reason the Institute has made a particular point of inviting treatment activists, socially engaged artists, and representatives of corporations that do business in Africa to participate in this day-long symposium.

There is no charge for the symposium, but seating is limited. To register, please call the UCLA AIDS Institute at 310-794-7209.
