A new study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that men who work in blue-collar jobs have a higher rate of illness than those men who work in white-collar jobs.
The study shows that men who work in farming, labouring, mining, transport and trades have a 60% higher chance of suffering from heart disease, diabetes and cancer than do men who work in sales, administration and the professions.
The full report Australian Health Inequalities 2: Trends in Male Mortality by Broad Occupational Group is available on the AIHW website. The report is the second part of the Institute's Health Inequalities in Australia : Mortality series. The first part was published in March this year and showed a narrowing of differences in the 'all causes' death rate between the least and most disadvantaged groups.
